I have a Happ over under coin door. I just replaced the coin slot lamps. Incidentally, they're a 12V automotive tail light lamp. What would happen if I tried to power these from the 5v on an ipac?
-would it light, but dimly?
-would it fry the ipac?
I'm more confident attaching them to the power supply on the ipac than I am trying to hack into the PC power supply.

You would have very dimly lit bulbs if it doesn't fry the Ipac. Hacking the PC power supply is one of the easier hacks in this hobby. All that is required (while the computer is off, please) is to cut off one of the 4connector molex ends that plugs into a hard drive/cd rom drive. You use the yellow wire for +12v and the black wire right next to it for ground. It is VERY SIMPLE.

I second what Mark said! If you know what conector you have on the power supply then go to the electronics store and buy the opposite end and insert your wires in teh corrosponding places, then you don't have to "CUT" the wires from your computer.
Your lights will be VERY dim if you only hook them to 5v. I tried and it didn't work well at all.
Just find the four slot plug in the computer, it has yellow Black Black red wires and you want to hook into the yellow and one black.
Have fun!

I personally just use a floppy connector and push wires into the connector. They dont come out if you use decently thick wire :) No cutting, no buying, we're all happy!

You can get a power splitter cable for next to nothing and hack that up. That way you still have a good disconnect in case you need to work on the door or power supply, but little chance of it coming apart.
Something like this (though shipping is a killer on it):

To get the power connector outside of your case, you can use something like this. Just do some searches for "PCI Power Bracket". There's like 10 different kinds with various types of power connectors on them. The one above is the 3 x 4-pin Molex version. I got mine off of eBay about a year ago....
