Well, I got tired last night of trying to play Asteroids with my joystick...and after looking at the original CP, I remembered it was more button driven than stick driven. I switched the controls in MAME so that the rotate ship controls were button driven and watched my score increase dramatically.
Curious though - how many of you also set up Asteroids to play this way?

Mine is setup this way. I use buttons from the player one side for rotate left/right and buttons from the player two side for thrust, fire, hyperspace.

I think we just did this thread a week or two ago. Most people preferred buttons if I recall. Maybe it was Space Invaders that was being discussed.
Check out AsteroidsGL (http://webpages.charter.net/astgl/astgl.htm). I like it better than MAME.
BTW, I still play with a stick because it feels comfortable and the controls default that way so I never changed it.

Hey, I set up my controls for Asteroids that way. In fact, that was one of the biggest reasons I designed my CP layout like I did. It is basically the Asteroids buttons layout (plus an extra button a few inches above the Hyperspace) , plus a Joystick on either side for Robotron. If you look on at my avatar, you can see a very early prototype of my layout with a baby Elmo tapping on the keyboard. I have made a few revisions to my CP since then, but my main design still revolves greatly around the Asteroids/Robotron oriented layout. Asteroids ROCKS!!!...Rock On Dude!!! 8)

I just changed mine about 2 weeks ago to use only buttons (player 1 buttons for movement, and player 2 buttons for the rest) after reading about it here. I love it.

I am still in the CP planning stages. My Yellow buttons will be my Asteroids config. It is one of my favs and I dumped a lot of quarters in it and still am not good... -lol

I do just about like the above post, but I've got two seven-button layouts, so I make the 2P "Neo Geo" button the Hyperspace button.

That's the main reason I have swappable panels - I have an exact Asteroids\Phoenix button layout.
