Title: Some one help, finished my CP but it doesn't work!!!
Post by: Hellfromabove on February 09, 2003, 08:26:11 pm
Ok I finished building the CP and wanted to test it out on my computer so I used my Radio Shack converter and loaded up Kawaks. After I loaded the game I wanted to calibrate the buttons. That's when everything went wrong. I tried to push up but nothing happened. I checked to see if the controller had busted the USB port but it was fine. The I can only use 3 of my buttons: R1, R2, and Select. I wired 2 controllers (PS and DC) to the joystick and buttons. I only used the buttons for select, R1, and R2 for the PS. Is there something wrong with my CP, please somebody help. Thanx.

-See Ya!!!

EDIT: Haven't tested the DC part yet because I don't have my DC with me at the moment. I will try that tonight. Please some help.

i'm no console expert... but did you follow some of the threads last week re: hooking multiple consoles concurrently to arcade controls?

I'm guessing you have some sort of short or worse a ground loop between the PS and DC controllers that will seriously give you intermittent issues.

Again I'm just guessing - your description of what you were doing was brief...

Did everything work before you hacked the arcade controls on?  Did you try just one hack at a time, adding players/controllers as you go?

Do you have a multimeter to step through every connections continuity...

By themselves both hacks work, but when I put them together they dont work. This is strange I don't get it. The grounds and everything are fine. What I did was take the wire for X from the PS controller and the wire for A on the DC controller and twist them together then solder them to the microswitch. Is there something I did wrong. Thanx.

I don't know enough to be confident in my answer... but my understanding is that you shouldn't take that approach as u will see problems like u are experiencing...

I believe u need to keep the two different console controller types electrically isolated and use somje sort of switching mechanism
(most recommended is manually plugging in what you need and and switching out via molex or dbwhatever connectors)

my understandong is that just dpdt switching out grounds isn;t enough...

Ahhh!!! I wish I knew this before hand. Damn now I gotta take off the hot glue that I put on it for it to stay intact and the solder and then get some quick disconnects I guess. Man that is going to be some work. Is there any other approach. Please anyone. I will try to do that tonight and post in the morning. Thanx.

The most common approach is to use some kind of quick connect plug between the controls and the interface hack. Like a DB25 Serial extension cable.

Ok I tested out the DC connection and everything seemed great until one problem occured. I was playing MvC2 and had entered training mode and selected my characters then when I was testing the buttons I came to realize that the X button and the Y button act as if I am pressing both. For example, I press X, the character is supposed to just do a light punch but instead he/she dashes. Same if I press the Y button. Does anyone know what the problem might be. I don't think it would have to do with the PS connection would it? Please reply. Thanx.

Sounds like a short across those 2 buttons, did you visually check the solder joint?

Yeah sounds like it. That's what I think happened. I guess I gotta check it. I am at school right now and I am going to go to Radio Shack afterwards and buy a Barrier Strip or a Terminal Strip for the CP and wire with that and some crimp-on spade tounges. Thanx.
