Title: Rom conversion tools - please help!
Post by: chris2922 on January 19, 2006, 02:37:54 pm
I have a version 0.89 rom set.
I am using a 0.36final DOS executable.
Many of the games dont work under this exe - mostly NEO-GEO roms.

I have successfully renamed some of them and they work fine.
Others had corrupt graphics or didnt run at all - bad checksums.

Is there a tool i can use to convert my 0.89 NEO-GEO roms to 0.36 compatible files?

You can use ClrMame (http://www.clrmame.com/) to try and rebuild your 0.89 roms into 0.36 roms. However, because some roms will have changed a lot since then you will find that you're not able to make a 100% complete set.
Here's a good ClrMame guide:

Thanks,
I have already used clrmame to rebuild the set from the 0.36 exe and it did fix a lot of them.
I also ended up with a merged set so alot of the clones are now insode the parent zips.

The neogeo roms were unsuccessful on the whole though.  Very frustrating.

Especially for Neo Turfmasters and Neo Bomberman.  I love those games!
Im sure i used to have old NeoRageX romsets but the cds are now to knackered to read.

Any other ideas?

According to MAWS, Turf Masters hasn't changed since 0.36b9 and Neo Bomberman hasn't changed since 34b4- so they should work for you. MI'd say your neogeo.zip is the problem.

You could use some 'rollback sets' to help the rebuild.
Rollback sets aren't complete roms, just the little pieces that have changed here and there in-between Mame releases, so it might be okay to tell you where to get them. But I'm not going to chance it. Try Google (http://www.google.com/search?q=mame+rollback).
