Title: Laptop Advice
Post by: Franco on January 16, 2006, 03:53:54 pm
Im looking to purchase a laptop and I would like some suggestions from you guys in the know.

Basically what I am looking for is a laptop that I can use for the usual basics (Word Processing, Internet BYOAC browsing) as well as for emulation, hopefully something powerfull enough to run Project64 as smoothly as possible.
Im also looking for TV out, somewhere around a 60GB+ HDD and at least 512MB RAM. Screen size isn't too important. Im not sure how laptop processor's measure up to desktop PC's either so I dont really know what power im looking for. Ive always had Pentiums but I don't mind looking at AMD's either.

Oh yeah, all of this hopefully for around

I received an HPzv6000.  It has an AMD64 3200+, 512 ram, 100 gig, Svideo out w/128mb independant video card, dvd burner, and was under a $1000.  I hooked up some game pads to it and have almost everything loaded on there.  It's perfect for gaming on the go.

If you spend $750 or $1,750 now - in 3 years both will be worth $250.  so consider depreciation.  or like buy a $500 one every 2 years.

Not exactly sure what that has to do with anything.  The same can be applied for a regular PC, a car, bacon....

Check out http://www.notebookforums.com/ (http://www.notebookforums.com/), there are reviews and advice on every notebook out there.

I have been looking for a desktop replacement and gaming laptop here: http://www.pctorque.com (http://www.pctorque.com)

I'm sure within those 2 links people from the UK will have recommendations on where to find something.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice guys. Ive found one laptop kinda in my price range that meets my spec, see what you think.

http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=3WHT&v=1#infoarea

Fujitsu Siemens Amilo L1310G

15.4" WXGA Widescreen

Celeron M380 1.6Ghz

512MB Memory

80GB Hard Drive

DVDRW Dual Layer Multiformat

GRAPHICS: ATI Radeon Express 200 (with S-video out)

Battery Lithium-Ion 6 cells

W-LAN: 802.11b/g

USB 2.0

Windows XP Home

Works 8

It seems to tick most of my boxes, im just not too sure of the processor? Do think I will be able to run MAME (nothing too new) and PJ64 etc on this?

It looks ok, but I think for the money, the video and chip are weak.

Pound to dollar ratio is what at the moment, about 2 to 1?  I think you could do better personally.  At the sites I listed, people are finding things in your price range with better components.

Thanks for the reply Nailz,

I have seen a few but not all of them have Video out, which is a must for me. What about this one? How does the processor compare to the last one?

That looks like pretty decent specs, you just may want to do some research on Acer, I admittedly can't speak for the quality of them so checking other peoples reviews would be a good indicator.

Hmmm, build quality isn't sounding the best after what ive been reading. Looks like I may have to look at something else. Dang.

Double hmmm, found another site where they seem to be praising the Acer 3023WLMi (http://tinyurl.com/cjwwc). The original site, in hindsite, seemed to be knocking Acer's build quality in general, not specifically the 3023WLMI's. Plus it seems from the Acer is shipping with a 128MB X700, NOT an X600 which is a bonus too.

Hmm, think I may get this one and give it a try, I can always send it back if it does not meet my expectations.

Thanks all.....

I have one of the older acer aspire laptops, 2.0ghz amd. I rebuilt it from scrap (smashed screen etc) and have to say that the build quality seems fine, the actual machine took a friend punching it (as hard as he could) without any damage other than the smashed screen, and then also survived him reversing his car over it with nothing more than a couple of small scratches but no cracks  (it was insured)

the only thing I can fault it on is the fan is noisy on the cpu and it gets rather warm.

I take it your friend was doing an insurance job on his laptop and you were good enough to take the 'accidently' damaged one of his hands?  ;)  Either that or he is a clumsy phsycotic!

From the reviews I have been reading it is meant to be fairly silent and stays pretty cool too. I should be getting it today so Ill let you know what I think!

Have you seen the new laptop from HUMMER?

It's specially designed to sit comfortably on the laps of men with small penises.

I can not give laptop advice.
I am just a simple computer.
