Hi all. I want to upgrade to windows XP but don't want to pay the big bucks. Anyway, I saw several stores selling XP OEM (original equipment manufacturer) version for about half to one third the cost. What is the difference between an OEM and non OEM version? What would be missing?
Any input would be appreciated.

I believe the disks that come with Dells would be considered OEM. They only work with a Dell. You can modify some files on them and reburn it to load on any machine.

I've also had issues concerning the Product Key during activation, apparently microsoft won't let people use the OEM activation key, forcing people to call the 800 number (Activate via Telephone option). You still get an activation key after talking to a service rep, but it is a bit of a hassle.

There is absolutely nothing different between a retail or OEM version in everyday use.
OEM versions must legally come with an OEM computer OR be sold with a piece of hardware to adhere to MS's TOS. Retail versions get boxed up all purdy-like and can be sold seperately from computers and hardware.
As far as you installing it or using it... there is ZERO difference. Just get a non-branded OEM version (ie NOT the dell version mentioned above) and you'll be fine. There is no need to alter a Dell version and go through the hassle to make it work (in a legal grey area) when you can just buy a standard OEM version. Just buy from a reliable seller and you'll be fine. I highly recommend newegg.com and zipzoomfly.com.

Difference is that you dont get the pretty boxes or the user manuals. Thats what OEM versions tend to be, just the product straight out.

That means your activation key was previously used... NOT that it was an OEM version. I've used at least 20 OEM XP versions on systems i've built and have never had that problem. You do have to call in if your key was previously used though, and you want to void the previous usage and get a new key.

Thanks for the info guys. Good to know there is no real difference. I can live with a little hassle if the activation keys been used...heck I'm saving half the cost...it's worth any hassle I'd have. Off to newegg.com.

if you're ordering from newegg, the key won't be uesd. If it is, contact Newegg because there was a problem.
The only time I've had to deal with key registrations on the phone is when I bought 2 used copies of XP from someone who had previously installed them and uninstalled them. You should have no problems if you get it from an online site.
