Title: How bad is it when...
Post by: Lilwolf on January 14, 2006, 09:41:15 am
How bad is it when one color (red) starts going in / out on a monitor?

I bought 2 of those 21" industrial vga monitors that a company was selling (non-touchscreen version of a touchscreen monitor).  I can't remeber the name it was originally sold as.

Anyway, I've been enjoying these 80lbs giants as dual monitor setup (so that both monitors line up with each other) for a few years...

Now my second monitor has lost its red color.  I tried swapping the cable (octipus -> standard vga) and it seemed to fix it... for a few minutes.   Then it lost its red color again... It kinda came in / out for a few minutes then went out for good).

So, is it gone?  Can it be fixed?  By me?  Or is it one of 100 things?  Something a local tv repair guy might be able to fix?

Thanks!

Could be anything from bad solder joints, bad connectors/cables, an intergrated circuit or transistor going flaky, an internal problem in the picture tube (sometimes repairable with a rejuvenator).

the in/out for a while then out completely sounds like a dry joint on your input socket (based on you saying all you did was swap the leads) would suggest checking there as the first port of call.

If I don't have time to play with it any time soon.  Is it the type of thing that a monitor replair place should be able to detect and fix (like really fix)?

I bought the monitor for pretty cheap... and the only reason I really care is that I like having two of the exact same monitor.

and what should I expect as a price to look at?  I haven't dealt monitor repairs in years... and when I did it kinda had bad luck with them.
