I was visiting my local Target store today and noticed a cool light toy that was on clearance. It was one of those plasma type screens that are normally inside of a globe, but this one was on a flat glass panel. In addition it also could be made sound activated. I picked up two and will mount them on each side of my marquee panel. It is a nice blue light and the best part is that it runs off 12 VDC.

I will get some photos up when I have them mounted and installed. Oh it was only $6.

These appear "solid" by the pics, but just to verify...They wouldn't work as speaker covers would they?

Plasma plates can also be found on ebay (http://search.ebay.com/search/plasma-plate_W0QQfclZ4QQfnuZ1QQ) and Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BHNNTM/ref=pd_sxp_f/102-5873366-7870514?s=kitchen&v=glance&n=284507). And I agree, they would make a cool addition to the marquee or, using 10" or 12" plasma plates, to larger panels.
-
You could not use it as a speaker cover as it has a base to it underneath and it is solid. It is like three pieces of plexi stuck together with the middle one hollowed out. That is where they put all the fireworks. The larger panels are pretty expensive, in the hundred dollar variety. I found a website where a company makes custom stuff like a bar top, but anything and everything was crazy expensive. They are called plasma discs I believe.

FWIW,
If anyone is looking for a larger plasma disc, our local Walmart carries the 12" versions for $26.00
-
No kidding? I couldn't find them on the web for cheap anywhere. Thanks.

they were sold out at my Target too....
