Title: Is someone making a profit from the art lib.?

I saw this.  I know someone here did the MONSTERCADE and I see some other art that was done on this board.

Anybody have any idea who this is?

I see these dudes at auctions ALL the time.  I'm betting these guys read the forums here too.  They make some sweet looking cabs, although they HAVE had some questionable (to me) options on 'em.

Is it considered "making a profit" if they're printing the stuff up and selling cabs though?  I mean, if you print up artwork using stuff from there, isn't that then saying that you're stuck with that cab or you have to give it away so you don't make money off the artwork you PAID to have printed?

My thing is that people have worked hard on the Art and someone comes and snatches it up.  I know the monstercade was and persons work and now there is going to be like 50 monstercades.  I know I would be upset if someone used my art to sell manufactured cabs.  There is a difference when a individual uses the art for their personal use but a company would piss me off.  that's the question I guess.  Should a company have the right to use the art for profit.

Well, when that person put their own artwork into a library, they did agree that it could be used by others.

That of course never said anything about for profit but clearly they had no issue with there being 50 MonsterCades out there.

That artwork was/is mine.

If they are buying it from Scott then that makes a difference.

Please explain why then.  Is the difference that he's "one of us" versus having Kinko's print it up?  The only difference laid out here is WHO printed it, and you've now stated that there's a difference based on that.

FWIW, those guys AREN'T mass producing cabs.  They make 'em just like we all do, with routers, saws, and all the other various crap we use.  IIRC (can't remember if this was theirs or not), they've also used gutted cabs the same way folks here have done.  The difference is that they're selling their cabs.  I'll ask again, if I make a cab using artwork from the library, am I then somehow obligated to keep it forever or give it away for free even though I've PAID to have the artwork printed up?

I'm talking about the issues he brought up with using art from the library.  He originally brought up 2 issues, and only addressed one based on who prints it.

If Scott put the artwork in the library for everyone to use (since the author said do what he sees fit), we'd be right back in the same situation.

Well, IMO, if they're selling a cab with that art on it, and the author gave permission for someone to print and sell that art, then it is a nonissue.

Now, if they were printing it and simply selling prints, it would be a different issue as they were profiting strictly from the art.

I wholeheartedly agree with that point.

Though, there is a point of view that says that he would not be profiting from the art but from the service of printing... I suppose that would only hold true if the print service were generic and the client supplied the art.

You cannot profit from a service of printing without having art to print. Even client supplied art gets some scrutiny.

For me, the bottom line is that if you create art and do not want someone else to use/abuse it, dont post it on the internets. If you do, you better watermark it.

I have used the art library for my games. Love the resource. Thanks to those who have contributed. With that said, I cannot imagine that they expect the art to never get exploited. I do know of a few vectorizers that have stopped contributing because of that.

So if Kinko's won't print something because it contains artwork created by someone else, we b1tch.

So if Kinko's won't print something because it contains artwork created by someone else, we ---smurf---.  If someone IS printing artwork created by someone else, we ---smurf---.

I'm gonna need a scorecard to keep up with your crazy theories ;)

Yeah, they've been on Ebay for a while.  Here is their site:
http://www.dreamhomearcades.com/

They used the have a couple of pictures with themselves next to cabinets but no more I guess.  They use a lot of artwork from Scott.  I'd given permission to Scott to use the Pac/Ms Pac artwork as well.  I see they use that a lot too.  I wrote them a nasty email a while back because their auction said it was their own custom artwork.  They replied very nicely and apparently don't say that now.  I felt like a butthead because I'd only written because I thought it was Super Auctions (their Ebay ID), the real Super Auctions I mean, selling cabs on ebay.  Turns out they are nice and normal guys.

Nannuu, can you tell me...are these guys about mid-30's, one kinda slim, the other of average build?  Either guy wear glasses?  I'm just wondering if these are the same guys I'm thinking of since I never saw the pic.

I think they use SuperAuctions as their ID because they usually bring a cab to the Super Auctions as kind of an "advertisement" and it's prolly easy to steer someone that way if they wanna see one of their cabs in person instead of buying via e-bay.

Oh man I can't remember.  I think there is one skinny guy and one larger guy?  I don't remember the pictures very well.  I was looking at the cabinets more.  They make nice cabs.
