Has anybody been to a "Super Auction" to pick up parts or complete cabs before. I would like to find a modern 25-33 screen inch cab that I can then convert and this seems to be the best way to go about doing it for me.
I have a big truck to haul them home and I put aside about 500$ to build just a cab, so is it even possible to get a modern cab working or not in the 500$ range.
I would really really like to find a streetfighter III cab or a House of the Dead 2 standup cab to convert. Though i an always make my own side art if I had to.
Also having never owned a commercial cab, can they be broken down into smaller pieces so they can be moved easier. I can fit the entire cab through the doors in my house but I would need some major help wrestling it around.

Ah, newbie questions.
The answer to your last paragraph is: It depends.
If you bought a sit-down Daytona racing cabinet. No it would not fit through your front door.
If you bought a mini cabaret style cabinet, yes, it would fit through your door, and even fit in the back of a wagon style car.
OK sarcasm aside... The average cabinet fits through front doors with about half an inch to spare. Those with wide control panels, you can remove the panels. But otherwise nothing else "breaks apart".
Measure your door ways, then measure the goods at the auction. You shouldn't bid on something you haven't inspected anyways.

And you should be able to find something under 500 that will fit your needs. I think the one in atl that I went to had a sf3 machine go for ~500 if not a little over 400. I bought a virtua fighter 2 for 275 that is in pretty good shape.

PS: If your goal is to MAME, you should be able to pick something up under $200.

Thanks, not so much a newbie at the emulation stuff but at the whole recreation of the arcade experience I am. I can build a cab pretty easy at least from the plans but it would end up looking like the West Elm arcade more then something that stumbled out of a arcade in my hands.
I have measured the doors and will be bringing my tape measure with me to the auction. More worried about getting it into/out of the truck then anything. Plus not frying myself on a old monitor.
After explaining the project to the guys are work we have decided to try and get three or four decent cabs at the auction and work on them together.
I have built the PC for the project already and have done some limited keyboard hacking in the past so I am sure I can do that as well to get the rest of the project finished.
I really just wanted to know what the more modern cabs go for complete. If they are only 300-400$ then I would be able to collect my absolute favorite games.

now it depends on the game. Anything popular will go for more especially recent games. Most of the people bidding are trying to get games that think will still generate enough cash to cover the cost they put in it. There was a madden game that went for I think 2300, I don't think I saw a golden tee go for less than a grand. It really just depends.

When & where is this Super Auction in Costa Mesa?
I prolly wont go and certainly wouldnt bid against you but I would like to someday go and see one.

I went to the auction in costa mesa about a year ago or so. It seemed to me that the prices were a little high but I was just gettin into the whole mame thing back then and didn't know how much cabs cost. When I was there they had 200+ games for auction and they start on the older (generally less expensive) cabs and move their way down the row eventually hitting the pinball games and sit downs. I didn't stay for the whole thing as I am sure it took at least 5 hours just for the auction.. and they were late starting it. Just plan on spending some time there.. pack a lunch and a few waters maybe.

Well I am for sure going down. I will have space to bring back about 2 cabs if anybody wants one in san diego on top of the two that I am going to try and buy.
I have orders from my boss to bring back a golden axe in any condition at any cost as well.
No cost to high he is more excited about this them me.

Hey Weary,
I have been to the past 3 auctions there. You will definately be able to buy a dead cabinet for Mameing for dirt cheap. Just make sure that you have plenty of time. They don't auction the dead ones until the end which is usually around 3pm.
The auction starts at 10am. There is really no reason to arrive more than 30min or so early.
To give you an idea, I bought a dead Mad Planets at the last auction for $40. If you are going to gut it for mame anyway, the condition doesn't really matter. I'd stay away from anything with water damage though. Not worth the headache.
I'll be there this weekend for sure.
By the way, feel like hauling a game up to West Hollywood for me? I'd be willing to kick you some cash. I don't feel like renting a truck this time cause i'm not actively looking for anything. But, you never know with this stupid hobby.
