Title: Stupid car
Post by: ChadTower on January 10, 2006, 08:35:54 am

So, wanted to check my transmission fluid because my shifting sounded off.  Took me a half hour to get the hood open, I split my finger open because it's 5 degrees out, and now I can't get the hood closed to go to work.

ARGH.

You have some seriously crappy luck with cars don't you? Is the latch broken or just frozen up? You might shoot some WD-40 or similar into it if it's just frozen.

Had another thread on this a short while back... latch is rusted, needs replacing.  Works now but the springs are all gone and I have to replace them with stuff like zip ties from time to time.  I haven't had the chance to get a Chilton's and find a replacement part yet.

I suggest getting a Clinton manual instead, parts are always easy to find in that one!

So, I got it to engage, and then went to get the Chilton manual.  The manual didn't have anything useful in it, though, beyond a diagram of the latch.  That's stuff I can see just by looking at it.

I took some hard looks.  It's all gunked up from being in a car for 7 years but seems to be intact.  All of the springs are missing, presumably from rusting and falling off, and that is the problem.

So, if I could find suitable replacement springs, and take the latch out and clean the thing, maybe that would do the job.

Where the hell would I fidn replacement springs other than buying a new latch?

AutoZone or some equivalent parts place may have them.  They sometimes surprise me with what they actually carry.  Barring that, the Honda dealership WILL carry them, and you should be able to buy just the springs you need, or perhaps they'll come in a "kit" comprised of all the crap they want you to replace if you're gonna be replacing those springs - kinda like all the crap they give you in a spring kit for drum brakes, if you've ever done those

So there is an Autozone 2 miles from my house.  I'll swing by on the way home and see what they can do for me.

I'd just order a new latch from Honda (this is a Civic, right?) Probably will only be about $30ish and there are usually just two or three bolts that hold the latch on. It's probably a ten minute job.

A ten minute job for you.  These things usually end up taking me a week because something unforeseen happens, like I undo the latch bolt and the transmission falls to the ground.

Heh, was doing a web search, found this (http://www.faqfarm.com/Q/How_do_you_get_to_the_hood_latch_on_a_99_Honda_Civic_to_repair_or_replace_it_if_it_is_not_catching).  Yeah, thanks, this much we know, but where do we get a spring?

A ten minute job for you.

Too bad you aren't around here. I'd fix the thing for you for a beer or two.

Stingray, tie that big long rope to some of those trees so Chad can pull himself closer to you.

Chad, go to AutoZone's website and see if you can get one of those exploded parts diagram thingamabob's they'll use to check for you anyhoo.  I think they may even let you check to see if your local establishment has 'em in stock

Hrm, I tried poking around their site, didn't see anything like that.  I'll go back.

Ah, they don't have a DIY guide for a 99 Civic and the fancy ones are subscription based.  It's okay, the latch is pretty simple and I did see the diagram in the Chilton book.

Yeah, thanks, this much we know, but where do we get a spring?

They usually come right after the winter.

a roll of duct tape is so much cheaper than that... plus it hold up to like 250 M.P.H. I think nascar even uses it.......

Just the other day I bought a roll of Scotch duct tape. On the label it says "the official duct tape of NASCAR". Tell me that's not a redneck sport. ;)
