well, so i have a half built arcade sitting at my dad's place and i wanted to work on it again this weekend
in the past 3 years i've moved over 5 times and now i'm thinkin about making this thing more portable (while also allowing me to fit a larger screen inside)
the folding arcade has been born
i made a mockup out of cardboard and now i'm thinking about going through with it
the only exposed hinge i will have will be one on the side
i just wanted to get some feedback here before i jump full head into it
maybe i'm just getting caught up in the idea and i don't really need it
who knows
most likely if i finish i'll also build a custom cart for it
obviously the tv, marquee and glass will have to be removed (maybe the speakers too)
but it looks like everything else will stay connected (including the coin door)
let me know what you guys think

That's a cool idea. Will the PC be protected during folding? Could you draw up some sketches, I'm dying to see your design.

well
i'm going to be using a 27" apex tv inside so to hold it up i just have a board being held by 2 two by twos
i was plannin on mounting my computer to the underside of this board
that way it's one less piece to deal with
so the pc will actually not be folded inside the arcade

I think that's a cool idea. Let's see some pics of the mock-up!

I believe for all the trouble of removing stuff, it would be easier to just make a cab that
seperates into two pieces. Top and bottom. Both could actually have wheels, so when you take the top off, both can be rolled arround easily.
Moving only half a cab greatly reduced the weight and difficultys with fitting it thru certain areas.
You may even go for 3 pieces.. making the control panel detach as well.

I'm with Xiaou2. The question you have to ask is, "Why?" You're not making it any lighter by having it hinge and it may even be bulkier and more prone to damage. If it's hinged on the side will you be able to get it through the door?

But, it would be cool if you went with a Transformers theme and made it fold. Perhaps even fold into a cocktail!
That would rock...

nice! but it has to go to robot as well! :P

one of the reasons i want to do this is because my arcade will be too big to fit through basic doorways
this way i don't have to unscrew and rescrew my arcade
i am not saying that i'm a built guy either but me and one other person shoudln't have a problem moving it, especially on wheels
we'll see, i decided that i'm going to finish it as a normal cab first and then make my decision as to if i'm gonna make it fold
i'll try and remember to post some pictures of my cardboard mock-up 8)
later

I think you're asking for trouble.
There's some weight involved in here, and you mention 27" tv.
I'm not sure I understand the way it's gonna fold, so perhaps it would be better
to wait for those pictures
