so ive only heard bad things about win2000 and ME. i vaguely recall that one is worse than the other. which can i live with. a lot of the lappies in my price range seem to have one or the other installed. thing is, if it were a PC no worries id just install my win98. but from what i can gather its pretty hard to get drivers and the like for a laptop.
any experiences/thoughts?

WinME sucks. Windows 2000 is bullet proof.

Win2000 is just Win XP without the pretty colors, it's solid. Solid as a rock. Ooooooh!
I've only ever installed Windows on one laptop (it was a Fujitsu Celeron 550, I put Win2000 on it) and had no issues with drivers, Windows recognized all the laptop's hardware and used it's own drivers no problem.

cool. got it
so win ME- blows chunks
win2000- da bomb!
thanks (",)

Yeah, Win Me is very unstable and buggy. 2000 is rock solid. I need to sell my old laptop. It's a Toshiba Satellite with 1.06 GHz Celeron and 256 MB RAM. 15 GB HD with 14.1" TFT display. 22 Mbps wireless card.
Currently has XP Pro and runs great. I really only used it as a toy...It has little use as I dont travel with it. I used the battery about 6 times so it should still hold a nice charge....
PM me if you're interested. I'd sell it for $300 or so. I also have a laptop with a 486-25 (DX) if you want something a little (er...a lot) cheaper :-)

might look here - I've never bought notebooks from them, but I have bought other stuff. Be forewarned though - most of these have preinstalled OS's but don't come with disks. However, if you have your own OS install disk...

you should run into no problems with windows 2000 on a laptop,
I have one sat here with win 2000 server on it which gets thrown in as a replacement whenever I lose one of my proper servers, seems to cope with high loads fine and has not been re-installed for 4 years (in my book thats pretty reliable for a windows based system)
my only gripe with windows 2000 is that it is slow to boot up.

oh yeah it runs it fine..... I have mame32 version .78 on my desktop at home and runs it just fine.....

Do you have the disc that came with your PC? I think I remember you saying you have XP on your PC, but I dunno how they work stuff on your funny island. The words and money don't match up, but it all seems "close", so...... ;)

Some of the dual mouse things like CABAL and 2-player Marble Madness don't work on it, but I wouldn't use it for a cab, but it should be fine for a laptop.

have never had any issues with any versions of mame under win2k.
from experience it is very difficult to lock up a system running on win2k (unless you are writing code for it at kernel level then its hard not to lock it up :) )

My emulator rig is a 1Ghz, 512 MB RAM running W2K. It can run pretty much everything, including MAME, without any problems. Even PSX and N64 don't have problems.

Microsoft actually admitted that Windows ME was garbage. They apologized and everything. LOL

hmmm, dunno about Merikee, but in Straya PC's dont come with the OS on a CD anymore. only pre-loaded. with mine, i convinced myself XP was busted and i was soooo hanging out to do a proper re-format so i bought XP pro. that's why i have a cd...
