Title: not another generic "best FE" thread
Post by: Svaroh on January 07, 2006, 03:31:47 pm
hi all, ive been trying like mad for the last week to get mamewah to work, but it continually crashes after playing 1 game and during loading a second.

im using an intell p2 400mhz 128mb ram radeon 7000   as my mame pc, im running mame v0.53 commandline version and it works fine.

i want to play the classic games from the 80's, maybe some 90's.

so my question is, is there a more idiot proof FE that will work given my system and my end goal, what is the best FE for my application.

im not looking for flames, im just getting frustrated as my self-imposed deadline looms

thanks in advance,

-J

Hi ,

You can try AtomicFE ti will work on your configuration. But i think you will have to change the defaul skin (which is animated) by a non animated one due to the low power of your PC.

There is dozens of skin to download on my website.

Have a look.

Add my vote to those saying MameWah isn't ready for prime time.

I've managed to get ArcadeOS working reliably, and it's also an option for your setup.

Are you crazy?  It sounds like you're not ready for prime time.

I'm just defending the FE.  It's a great program, and I don't want other noobs to think it's not a top line program.

I agree. Mamewah is used by LOTS of people with no issues whatsoever. Yes it's not exactly intuitive but imo opinion craps all over ArcadeOS for ease of setup.

For Mamewah specific discussion

For a complete Mamewah setup:

Let me go a head and be "Captain Obvious" for a moment and say wjay ebetuone already knows which is likely lost on noobs.

This hobby has a destinct learning curve.
Mamewah and pretty much every other app you will encounter (front end or emulator) has a destinct learning curve.

Nothing in this hobby is idiot proof

Captain Obvious out.....

You've done nothing but ---smurfette--- about things here.  About a myriad of things that you can't figure out, can't find, can't be bothered to read yourself (as evidenced by some of your replies).  I call ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- on your claim that you're a software developer and had ANYTHING to do with the software used for this board.  NO ONE can be as big a whiner, as unwilling to read some docs, as INCAPABLE of understanding the docs after reading them as you've demonstrated yourself to be.  WHEN are you going to grace us with your magical elixir to solve all these problems that you claim are "bad programming"?  Clearly, by stating so, you're assuming that you are a GOOD programmer, so put up or shut up.

IMO, your crap doesn't add up.

My version of AOL doesn't have this option... I will try to get the latest version just to be sure.
I just started playing with MameWah and I have a very ominous feeling about this software as well... as a software developer, I get kind of depressed when I see some of the stuff that's out here and how problemmatic or badly documented it is.

A software developer?  Using AOL?  Unable to figure out software that NON-SOFTWARE-PROGRAMMER people are able to understand and get working?  Again I say ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow---. NOTHING you seem to say adds up, including your "I read the manual and it still doesn't make sense" and "I tried a brazilian things but none of them worked".  You've asked questions about MAME that are CLEARLY answered in the documentation, on the MAME site, or here.  Your shtick about "n0 1 wanst to help teh noob" is also wearing thin.  You've questioned the willingness of the people here to help others, you've put down the programming skills of people without offering your OWN product, and now you're badmouthing something that many people are able to get running, and get it running just fine.  You've offered backhanded apologies as in "I'm under pressure and apologize but...." and then proceed to run down a laundry list of reasons why it's someone else's fault why YOU can't figure out how things work.

You read like subzero, only a more careful version who's trying to hold his tongue to avoid being found out or booted again.  Like someone who realizes he's still got a project to finish and needs to be able to dance around long enough to get answers.  Anyone reading your professions of "just my OPINION" should have their spidey senses going crazy.

Here's an idea, Mr "software programmer".  Get to work on your crack front-end that'll solve all the inherent problems you keep finding with others' hard work.

Well, I've tried out MameWah a number of times over the years and have yet to get it working to my satisfaction quickly. Perhaps if I had days/weeks/months to dedicate to it I could, but working 50+ hours a week and making time for my family are more important than screwing around with software configurations.

In my cocktail cab, I began with ArcadeOS in 1999, moved to Mike Billings' Cocktail FrontEnd circa 2002-2003, then finally settled with MaLa 6 months ago when I rebuilt the guts of my cab.  Each time I changed front ends, I downloaded damn near all of them and gave them a fair shake.

I, too, am a software developer (developing and maintaining a very large OLTP application which is both multiplatform and multi-database) -- I even run a custom version of mame that I tweak so that the dip switches are always defaulted to cocktail mode, and MameWah just wasn't for me.

To each their own...

...rant...

Amen, brutha.

Any developer worth his salt knows that 99% of all documentation is crap.

Interestingly enough, I am a Precast Estimator and I am able to run Mamewah without a problem. It worked just dandy with very little hand wringing on my part, and not on some state of the art XP machine either. I did actually spend some time researching my few issues with the *search* button.

Just for the record. I cannot program jack ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.

thanks everyone for the replies, after much patience on the part of Minwah and jcrouse, and some goofing around in code i know nothing about, it works the way it ought to, not as clean as far as starting up a game, what with the dosbox etc, but fully functional and that's good enough for the girls i date.
