Title: Knob? $485 dollars?
Post by: JackTucky on January 05, 2006, 09:08:57 pm
Bought a "spec" home here in southern indiana in July.  Closed the deal and moved in with builder owing me a few things.  I kept a few thousand in escrow.

Found out shortly after closing builder is broke.

Kept a good relationship with him, didn't scream, didn't curse, and everything is done, except for one door knob, on my patio french doors.

The door knob is special.  can't get it from home dumpo.  lowes, etc.

I look at manufacturer/model#, it's a weather-shield door.

I call weather shield.   give them the serial#.   they say I need a hoppe lockset.

I call nearest weather shield dealer that the builder doesn't owe money to.

$485.

I say "I can get a whole new door for that"

He says, "not a weather shield door.  That's a damn good door"

WWYD?

Is the $485 still in escrow? Or is it out of your pocket. If in escrow, I would just get the knob.

I would go to the builder's house and steal his knob.

Then I'd give my knob to his wife, his daughter, and his horse.

It's in unofficial escrow.  I have the money.  in my bank account.  I'll probably never give the money to him, since he's just about gone/broke.

So, technically, it's out of my pocket.

Is a weather shield door worth that much to me in energy savings?  My bro in law just bought a french door with blinds inside the glass for $584.  Is it possible that my door is SO much better than a decent quality door from home depot?

In reality, no it probably isn't. If you don't have to worry about the builder, I would just do whichever was the cheapest and still decent in quality.

that's what i'm thinking.  of course you throw in the, "uninstall/reinstall new door" factor.

Maybe you can resell the old door.  "Weathershield French Door.  Perfect Condition.  Just needs replacement knob."

Nice. This might just pay for the new door.

Sucks, but if you won't notice it by replacing the whole door, have at it.  $500 for a door knob borders on whatever's after insanity unless it's solid gold.

Is there no way to alter the door to take a normal bolt/knob?

I believe each person should be evaluated on their own worthiness whereas your hatred is aimed stereotypically at large groups.

I move that we should, from here on out, call all french doors "FREEDOM DOORS!"

Yet you group texans all together.  Markrvp probably couldn't care less about your dopey texans remark.  It's just that you call everyone else out (did you use the racist word for some?), when we have fun, so you need to stand up to the same liberal huggy kissy feel good world you preach on us.

I think the Dallas Cowboys suck.  How much you want to be Markrvp thinks thats funny?

Good lord, you people aren't too swift, are you?

I quoted you and myself because JackTucky needed the help.  He didn't realize that when I said it I was quoting you from less than an hour earlier in a thread he was following.

I feel honored to have made shmokes tagline.  This together with  a token might get me on the subway.

In the meantime, lets all bask in the glory of shmokes liberalism.  Feels good to feel bad for others, doesn't it shmokes?

Wasn't this supposed to be about doorknobs?

If you can't make a regular doorknob work, you're not trying hard enough.

No, the thread went appropriately.

He wanted to talk about overblown knobs and Shmokes and JackTucky immediately started going at it.

How can that be incorrect?

I feel honored to have made shmokes tagline.

To be sure, it's a distinction not reserved for just anybody.
