I somehow burnt out my 14.4v DeWalt drill tonight. I'm very unhappy since it's not an inexepensive item and I've only had it a little over 2 years. :(
Since I've got some torx bits, I took it apart to see if something had just broken loose or something, but it's pretty clear that everything's working except for the motor itself.
It's out of warranty and I don't particularly want to deal with taking it into an "official DeWalt Service Center" if I can just replace the motor myself. Anybody know of a place to pick up a replacement?

You should be able to have the "official DeWalt Service Center" order you a replacement motor. One of the battery connectors in my handle bent over and I managed to fry the motor in mine also. I went to a DeWalt store we had here and just ordered a replacement motor since installation would have cost more. It's pretty easy to swap out.

I dropped my 18v from a ladder and snapped the casing off at the hand grip. I found a new casing and many other parts at: I ordered a new case and the drill is as good as new.

DeWalt also has a ceiling price on repairs for any of their tools. You should call up the service center near you (or any one, really) and give them the model number and type (it's on the label) of your drill. With that info they can look up the motor part number and give you a price. More than likely they'll have the motor in stock. Then ask how much a "max repair" is and see if it makes sense to have them do it for you. "Max repair" means just that - they'll replace anything and everything that is bad. You might want to get a new set of brushes, too. They are pretty cheap and since they are a wear part you might as well replace them at the same time.
If you go the max repair route, you might want to "accidentally" crack the case near the trigger before you take it in. Ask them to replace the clamshell housing and the motor. Makes it look just like new!
Usually the motor is about $60-$70 and a max repair is about $30 more. Total cost on the max repair will be about 50% of what the tool retails for.
Don't tell them I told you that.

Check e-bay. Contractors buy the sets and only use the batteries. You can find a drill and case (no battery) cheap sometimes...

There's supposed to be a way to replace the inside part of the batteries too, I've been looking for that, since I have 7(!!) 18V batteries that have started to show their age... :'(

If you take the battery apart it's just rows of rechargeable cells. Match the cells solder them together and there ya go. No sure if it's economical never tried it but I have seen the inside of the bat.

I ended up getting some chineese replacement batteries, cheap and they work well. I don't know if they will last as long as the originals, but they were about 1/3 the price. So I got Ni-MH cells for less than the price of Ni cad batteries. They came in about 3 days, and work great
