I'm planning on putting together a small 'intro' project to get me started on my way to building a cabinet in the future. Basically, I'm going to either hack together or purchase a spinner, and then make the control base for it.
Now, since this will be smaller, I'm thinking of doing a slanted box, similar in design to the X-arcade I'm currently using as a CP. I'd like to stick 2-3 buttons in it as well, wired into the mouse inputs on the hack or the purchased spinner.
Now, I think I can draw out the box (I envision a smaller version of the X-arcade trackball thingey), but what I'm wondering is what would be best to put over the wood I use to give it a semirugged finish?
TIA, the outcome if this project will determine how daring I am in the future :).

You can have a custom overlay printed at mamemarquees.com.
You can buy an actual arcade control panel overlay on ebay, or from DreamArcades.
Or there's this stuff:

Some other members had reccomended it, and I just bought a roll and tried it out on a desktop panel I built my brother for Christmas. It looks & feels great, and you get a roll that will last you a long time for the price of a single overlay. Which saved my butt, when I screwed up the first two times I tried to apply it. They've got black, silver, and several different woodgrain patterns.

Nice. I didnt know that stuff existed (didnt know there was an 'easy apply' version). Thanks a ton!
