For the Wikipedia article Cult videogames (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_computer_and_video_games), I was wondering what arcade games would qualify as being cult classics. I would say that Discs of Tron would qualify, as does Tempest and Joust. Those games seem hugely popular in the community but little known outside.
Any suggestions, opinions?

I would say games like Bubble Bobble or Mr. Do belong on that list more than Tempest or Joust. Who doesn't know about Tempest and Joust?
-
Black Widow, Gravitar and Major Havoc - some of my personal favorites, and most likely not known outside of the arcade community.
-
Ooh, ooh! Reactor! Love that game!
-
"Cult" Games like WacoMan or Moonie Patrol?
What do they mean by "cult"? Limited production but good fanbase?
I don't know if arcade machines fell into that type of catagory. Sure there were limited production machines, but can't think of one that would really qualify.
Black Widow and Gravitar are games that people knew at the time. They are just out of production now.

Much of the cult status is related to a fanbase outside of the mainstream. So if a game is popular by collectors and gameplayers alike but it didn't do well in the arcades, or a game that isn't well known by the general public but is fondly remembered by the arcade community. Bubble Bobble might be concidered a classic - many arcade visitors know and love that game so it is not just loved in the arcade community only.

I think Death Race would qualify due to the reaction it got from those outside the gaming scene at the time it was released:

Can't remember ever seeing it in the arcade but its always mentioned in the various "histories" of video games. I guess it was the original Mortal Kombat or Grand Theft Auto in the reaction it recieved.

Any and all vertical shooters developed by Cave, highly collectable and cult status.

Definitely Death Race. I only saw it once... in the lobby of a K-Mart. I was 8 and totally mesmorized by it. I was 8 and knew it was politically incorrect before there even was a politically incorrect. What I wouldn't give to play that game. Somebody needs to simulate it.
