Title: ATI vs nVidia Graphics Cards
Post by: USSEnterprise on January 03, 2006, 07:32:22 pm
Is there really any difference between the two? I'm perfer nVidia myself, but is there really any difference?

Lots of people like one, lots of people like the other.  I despise ATI for their neverending ineptidue with drivers, but that's just been my experience.

Of course I'm still reeling since voodoo cards lost the vidcard race.  Didn't see that one coming nosiree.

I didn't think there was any big difference, but that was while I owned nothing but Nvidia.

I bought a Radeon 9800 pro and the drivers have been for crap, next purchase will be an Nvidia card....

Drivers are what the user make of them

While ATI has had some crappy ones in the past, they ARE way better than they used to be.. Nvidia, also has had issues.. so saying ATI is total crap is unfair, because nvidia does the same crap..

Better, such a word.. there is no clear winner.. its all about what you can afford at the time..

Thats pretty much what I was going to say.  Both companies have had major driver issues, at the moment I think ATI is having more issues then Nvidia, but that could easily change with the next generation of vid cards.  I haven't been keeping up with it recently, but I remember when half-life 2 and doom 3 came out it became clear that one company  (I think it was nvidia) was better at direct 3d graphics (such as the doom 3 engine) and one (I think it was ati) was better at opengl (such as the half-life 2 engine).  I have no idea if thats still the case though.

What kind of a comment is "drivers are what users make them" ?!?!?!?   Drivers are what THE COMPANY MAKES THEM.  Jeez, sometimes I don't know why I bother....

However, I suppose if I took ATI's buggy driver and MADE it work properly, then I guess your statement would make sense.

How about this: Google ATI buggy and then google nVidia buggy.  You will get numerous results for ATI, however the bugs with nVidia will often be about the openGL emulation (which wasn't their technology to begin with).

Heh, wait a while and ati will be on top again.  3 years ago everyone hated nvidias drivers and loved ati's drivers.  6 years ago everyone hated atis drivers and loved nvidias, 12 years ago everyone was loving their voodoo cards and never even heard of ati or nvidia....maybe I went back a little too far.

Actually in 1994 I was selling exclusively ATI cards (they're just down the road from me..sorta).  Drivers have always been an issue with those cards.  However, maybe I'm just sore because of all the tech support I had to do on ati cards.  CURSE THEM ALL TO HELL!   :)

I remember the first time I ran a detonator driver and it just....worked!   ;D

OpenGL is still USED technology for one, so there goes taht argument

Google "Anal butt rape with donkeys" youll get lots of hits too.. in fact, any random thing will.. fact is, users are idiots.. always will be, and always will blame ATI or NVIDIA for Shipping damage or any other random crap..

Oh and lets not forget, MOST idiotic complaints about ATI cards, are from people who bought CHEAP THIRD PARTY CARDS..

Learn2TechSupport

Fti, Uninstalling Nvidia drivers and switching to ATI isnt enough.. you have registry crap to take care of.. ATIs drivers are perfectly fine..

EDIT: And before you say "OMG ATI FANBOY" Im running an Geforce 7800GTX.. So there goes that one..
I said OpenGL wasn't their technology...dammit make sense my frontal lobe is aching.

Why in the name of all things holy would you buy an expensive card if the alternative is so much more stable and you planned to post on the internet that you think they are buggy?!??

Google "Anal butt rape with donkeys"

Seriously, have you ever tried to make a factual connection in any of your replies?

ATI have very bad driver issues.
One very wierd thing with them is their VGA output is of higher quality than DVI. This I experienced on 3 of their cards.

personal experience with both makes.. nvidia cards always seem to work perfectly but tend to be a touch slower, ati cards tend to run a little faster but I have always found they have issues with transparency and layering which if you only ever used ati you would never notice but having seen the same thing on nvidia you can see where the errors are.

to be fair my experience may be down to machine configs... Nvidias are on my main system (athlon xp 2000, 1 gb ram, windows 2000 server) and atis are on my fun (it doesnt matter if it gets killed) system (athlon xp 2000, 1gb ram win xp)

both systems are 100% up to date on drivers etc

Just thought I'd point out that I last two video cards have been ati and I've never had a driver issue.  The cards I've had are the Radeon 9500 pro and x800 pro, before that I had an nvidia geforce 3 which had all kinds of driver problems.  Granted my one case does not prove anything one way or the other, just shows all ATI is not bad.

I had a 9500 pro as well, and it had a ton of artifact issues with BF 1942 (which is what I bought it for).

I never played BF 1942, but I'm playing BF 2 on the X800 and haven't had any problems (not graphical related problems anyways, that game is buggy as hell).  The games I did play on the 9500 never had any issues, as I said before.

I just upgraded to a PCI-E nVidia, and man what a sweet piece!  It's a 6600 and this time around I got it for BF2 and Call of Duty 2.  Again, even with a new motherboard, processor, and SATA drive, it installed without a glitch and plays games with all the bells and whistles turned on.

Heh, but do you see any irony in saying that BF2 is 'buggy as hell' when you are running an ATI?? :)  I've played quite a bit of it and haven't come across an issue yet.  Could I interest you in an nice juicy nVidia card? ;)

Actually some of those bugs sound pretty good, I wouldn't mind getting that levelling bug.  However I also often have the problem with the 'server' not registering my shots.  Oh suuuure the other guy just says I missed him, but now I know what the problem really is ;)

The tank of a cabinet I have has 7 fans built in, so another big one would never bother me, I find it keeps rodents away  :D

Yow, thought we were making fun of ---smurfy--- cars.  You have my condolences...

Now someone is going to step in and tell me how much they love their 82' Civic Wagon....
What condolences. I beat a Holden Monaro (Pontiac GTO for you yanks) at drag racing up hill in that thing.

Moron didn't know how to shift properly and stalled the car on start.  ;D

And just to keep it off topic.

He was quite pissed off when he caught up with me (about 300 meters later doing about 120 in a 70 zone).

Then I see a flash from the side of the road. Bang. Moron got caught by a speed camera, and at that speed, bye bye license.

Made my day.  :D
