Post by: Xphile on February 06, 2003, 12:19:49 am
saw this and thought  "perfect for mame" :)

640*480 max res..

I can't afford one due to the exchange rate being so crappy, duties/taxes at the border and what is sure to be extreme shipping costs to north of the 49th, but I figured it might be the perfect thing for someone here..

take care,
x

How come he says they "CAN'T" ship UPS. Are they over 130lbs? Seems fishy to me.

He shipped UPS for me.  They only way about 75lbs, and I basically had to arrange for UPS to pick it up from his warehouse.  He just wouldnt handle the scheduling of the pickup for some reason.  Anyway, im very pleased with mine, it has been on 24hrs/351 days and counting without a problem so far.

what are the pros and cons associated with this monitor?
is it basically just a very large fixed frequency computer monitor that works with a comp vid card?

Yep thats basically it.  Most of the time it doesnt come with a power cord either, so you have to hack an old computer power cable and solder it to the plug pins, unless you can find a molex connector for this monitor.

I don't really understand how resolution works in mame, does it ever use higher then 640*480?  Would I regret having this low of a resolution later?

I dont think there are any arcade games that go over 640x480 other than Vector games.. and thats only if you set them that high.. otherwise I think most games stay well below 640x480 Most classic games are somewhere around 224x288.

MOST games are below 640x480.  There are a few, but those are mostly either multiple monitor games or ones that had a wide screen.

However there is more than just mame.  I'd want at least 800x600 for zinc.

surprisingly enough Zinc doesnt look bad at 640x480
