Title: When to cut the t-molding slot???
Post by: Tim on January 03, 2006, 03:35:38 pm
I have almost everything finally in terms of parts and supplies except the t-molding and the slot cutter.

I have my sides cut, similar to an UA-II and I just realized that I dont have the slot cutter. I dont want to stop at this point and wait for an order to come in and I was wondering if I can assemble the cab now and cut the grove later of course paying attention to the pieces that I need to reach with a router.

This shouldn't be a big problem right??

Thanks guys.. Tim :)

It is certainly doable.  You'll just have to flip the cab over on one side to route the top side and then flip it over to route the other side.  It's kind of heavy, but certainly not the hardest thing you'll ever try to do.

Just make sure all of your screws/fixings are far away enough from the edge you are routing. Routers spinning at x'000rpm dont seem to like cutting through screws!

Also some people like to route the same groove from both sides of the material to make sure the slot is exactly in the center of the material. As long as you are happy with setting the router dead center you should have a problem, just make sure you set up and test cut using a scrap piece of material.

Fast replies.. I love this place.

Heavy.. thats true. My first sheet of MDF 3/4" weights about 100Lbs. I grabbed it like I would a sheet of gyproc and GOD it was heavy. After that I had the wife come out to the freezing garage and help move the second one.

Anyways.. ok I'll keep on it and build away. I hate starting something and have to stop because I forgot something.

I'm fighting time here as for somereason our winter in Saskatchewan has been very mild so I decided not to wait till spring.. I have at least a few more days till the real cold might show up.. I wish my garage was heated.

Thanks again guys.. Tim.

Just caught your post Franco.. Will do.. never thought of that. Thanks.
