I don't think Apple is making their DRM available to third parties without extensive royalties.

$.10 cents a song, and legal............for now.  It's set up just like ITunes.

If I understand correctly, just about any music software will find music on your computer(winamp, WMP, etc) and add it to their own librarys.  Now if you are talking about the way ITunes codes their music, then no, I have no idea.

I know any program can find and play the music but I am trying to figure out how I can play my music that I bought from the ITMS.  I thought I could play my music in iTunes but choose what what is being played and displayed using another program.  I guess it would be like a "skin" or something.

Just burn the songs as MP3's and it will take any of the privacy code out of the song. Then you can play on any player.

I know if you put the IPOD in Disc Mode i can read the database, but if the songs are still DRM'd then they won't play.

I have tested using the IPod with Freebox and I can read the IPod music database (all MP3's) as long as the ID3 tags are correct, but the only issue is the album covers do not come up due to the art files not being in the correct folder or format. That's why I asked Barcrest if Freebox can read the embedded art file in the ID3 tag, which might allow this to work.

I use Wincab jukebox on a PC with my iTunes library, and as long as the ID3 tags are all correct everything works fine.

iTunes embeds the artwork files into the ID3 tag itself, so you have to use a program that will extract them and place them in the appropriate folders for it to be displayed in your jukebox.

I use Export Artwork 4.1.0, but that is Mac software (I have an ibook, but run my jukebox on a PC).
I'm not sure if there is a similar PC product out there.

Once the artwork files are extracted it displays it everything in Wincab perfectly!  :D

Does anybody know of a good program, that will imbed the Album Art into the MP3 ID3 Tag, but look in the Album folder first to see if there is a .jpg there and if not then go out to the web to update the art? I have all my albums setup with the album art in each folder, and all the current programs go out to the web for the covers. Let  me know if anyone has an idea where to get something like this. Thanks

For playing the DRM'd itunes files you can apparently interface with quicktime to play them. I have not tried this as i don't have an IPOD or any Itunes DRM'd files but it could be worth looking at.

total recorder will convert them to a non-drm version...  (will record anything that goes through the speaker)... cool program...

I used it to get rhapsody to work through my jukebox...

BUT...

I just contacted rhapsody tech guys and they gave me the interface so I could control it from my app.  So now I can (as soon as I finish the app) press R1 and have a kids radio station stream through it... R5 for 50s station, R6 for 60's ect... plus I can play all Rhapsody's drm'd files...

plus I don't have to pay for any music I want to listen to (in full) while I'm a member... so for 10 bucks a month I get to listen to just about anything I want.  I really impressed with all I can stream with rhapsody!  Plus I can download them on my machine and play them from anything that can play a drm wma file (windows media player ect).

cool stuff...

If you want an external program to control iTunes for you so that it's actually iTunes that's playing the songs, but the other program is controlling it, then try this (you'll need Perl and maybe some programming skills):

http://bulknews.typepad.com/blog/2004/11/control_itunes_.html (http://bulknews.typepad.com/blog/2004/11/control_itunes_.html)

I haven't played with it, but since you have the source, you can modify it to suit your needs.

ViewTunes looks like just what I want but the buttons look a bit small.
