Title: RAM increase benefits
Post by: hnugz on December 29, 2005, 03:27:55 pm
OK so it seems like it doesn't really matter what video card I get, but the processor makes the most difference.  I will most likely be getting an amd 64 processor and MB from Fry's since they are usually pretty cheap.

So the question is, will it make a difference if I have 512MB ram or 1 gig?  What kind of performance will I get out of 512?  Since I'm going for the amd 64 I want to make sure I can play almost any game I throw at it.

RAM is so cheap nowadays I figured I might as well at least get a gig.

If you are talking about MAME, I doubt you'll see any difference.  I have 256 Meg and I haven't found a game yet that I can't play.

I have an AMD 1.0 Ghz w/ 160 MB of RAM. I also have a 64 bit Diamond Multimedia soundcard and a ATI Radeon 9250 256 MB DDR PCI video card. The card is overkill, but I got it for free and I needed TV out. Plays MAME .102 Romset very well.

Very few games in mame require more than 256MB. (there are a couple of games that could benefit from 1 gig but even with that they are hardly playable)
