Title: NoOne's Crazy Climber Cabinet
Post by: NoOne=NBA= on December 28, 2005, 07:21:38 pm
There are a few advantages to mandatory overtime--at least when you run the graphic department at a print shop, and have a brand new 30" inkjet.
Here's pics of my latest project.

I picked the cabinet up about 6 months ago, and built the replacement CP (to prevent damaging the original CP by retrofitting non-original joysticks to it).
I hadn't found time to do the replacement art I wanted for it until recently though.

The art is obviously not factory, but it's what I think should have been on it.
The CP is similar to the "deluxe" version, but doesn't have the bent plexi CP because I would have had to cut a cross member out of the way to do that.

I plan to make similar art for my Radical Radial, to complete the bookends of my collection.
I'll post pics of that one once it's finished.

The joysticks are an absolute dream on this cab.
The originals were beyond repair, so I started playing with my stash, until I got just the right feel.
The sticks are Competition bases with T-stik switches for the Up/Down directions only.
That tightens the Up/Down, but leaves the Left/Right loose.
That allows you to climb quickly without accidentally hitting diagonals.
The sticks themselves are aftermarket GGG.
That allowed me to get the height I needed, and get a balltop on them.

And lastly, here's a pic of the new CP.
It's all layered wood, to use the existing mounting brackets, dodge the previously mentioned cross member, and extend up the monitor bezel slightly to allow for the new graphics, and cover the existing instruction sheet.
The dustwashers are floated in there just below the surface, the way they should be.

I love Crazy Climber.  One of my all time favorites.

On the T-stick switches, do they still have the metal actuators that push down on the plastic switch?

Yes.
That's what tightens them up.
You can do the same thing with leaf-switch sticks, by bending in the leafs for the direction you want to tighten, but leaving the other directions further away.

I actually put a set of Wicos into this cab as the first try because I USUALLY prefer them to anything else.
I didn't like the feel of them in this cab though.

I think the art and the CP look great, man.   Cool cab!

Looks great, especially the artwork.

Did you design the artwork yourself?

Wow that totally rocks!

Crazy climber is one of the reasons that I am putting double joy sticks on the third side of my cocktail.  I am going to try a happ's competition on the left side and a t-stick on the right.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one who thought this game was worthy of being one of the great classics.

The CP art is actually from the Crazy Climber Deluxe cabinet.
I had to modify it to fit my custom CP though.
I'm attaching a picture of what the cab should look like for the Deluxe version.

There's a crossmember at the front of the cabinet that is glued into place.
That prevented me from adding the "deluxe" CP, unless I wanted to massacre the cabinet in the process--which I was unwilling to do.
I kept the original CP intact as well, rather than cut the joystick mounting brackets, which will only fit the factory sticks for this cabinet.
I doubt I will ever put it back on, as the original sticks for this game are pretty terrible, but it's there if I should decide to down the road.

The sideart is pulled from the CP art, with the layout being original...ish.
(I think there was some serious Donkey Kong influence to my design).
I would like to have done full length sideart, but the printer I have at work isn't wide enough.
