If you don't have divx installed get it. Its probably the most popular AVI compression being used right now. You don't have to use their player, if its going to play it should play in MP9 with their codec installed.

Use anything but Windows Media player :(

You can say all the bad things about media player that you want but its a lot easier to keep up to date then having to have multiple players to handle all the different formats.
I have 12 computers in my house, 2 on my desk at work and 6 laptops. I don't bother with trying to purchase or install some third party player that is a pain to keep updated. I watch movies or recorded tv on most of them and media player works great for me.
Most of the content that I watch is downloaded so I have to watch what I get it in. Very rarely do I see anything to download in real player or quicktime formats. I don't like realplayer because of its a properitary format. Same thing with quicktime. Both formats players are very intrusive and try to integrate with everything you do. I have enough stuff loading at startup that I don't need realplayer poping up ads in the corner. Quicktime also makes me mad because it claims its basic player is free but it constantly nags you to upgrade it to a pay version. If I record something in realplayer or quicktime and send it to my mother in law (or other member of my less than tech savy extended family) I need to make sure they have the right program installed to play it. If I record it in something media player will play I have no tech support calls.
Jakobud perhaps you could expound on why media player is so bad? Or at least suggest some alternatives and why they are good.
Yesterday I bought a mini portable dvd player, my new focus will be to convert everything to play on it. I also ordered a dvd writer yesterday so that shouldn't be to hard to do. Thats the current ultimate compatible format. If I can get dvd photo discs to play in a set top tv dvd player I will be a happy man.

both realpayer 8 and divx player used to give me a much beter picture when playing mpegs and avis, than wmedia player 7 ,although wmedia was the only one to play mpeg4.
i only downloaded realone player and wmp9 last month.(as ive been away)
i agree realplayer has become ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- over complicated with too many popups and crap.
quicktime is about 5 years out of date.
so now i tend to only use wmp as well.
why the 12 pcs and 6 laptops?
