Title: Old laptops
Post by: DrewKaree on December 21, 2005, 11:46:03 pm
My brother-in-law picked up some old laptop for $150.  Don't know WHAT it has, he didn't want to show me for whatever reason.  This'd be PERFECT for my wife, who just wants something to do word processing on and have it be portable, so to me, it doesn't matter what the heck it has.  Anybody know of some place online that sells something like this so I can get an idea of what they're selling?  The only thing he was willing (or able) to tell me was it had Win95 (and instead of asking me, the dumbass paid them to update it to Win98 for him ::) ).

Posting this brought up Dell's site in the ad window.  Checking their $500 deal now.

Check the Dell outlet site too.  They sometimes have some really nice deals on lower end laptops.  Also, look on some forums like HardForum or Anandtech for a budget laptop.

Or show your wife just how much you love her and buy my laptop that I have in B/S/T  :P

Good luck, I've seen a lot of decent laptops go for under $300 that would be plenty fast for simple net surfing and word processing.  They're out there.

mats ?
You can't see that in the picture, but she's blonde.
She just tries to reach that upper shelf which is otherwise unreachable from the floor.

My brother-in-law is a dunce.

I got a chance to check out the laptop today.  It's a friggen 133, and the guy paid $150 for it, plus he paid to upgrade to 98.  I am PHYSICALLY in possession of his old Win98 disk.  He PAID for something he already owned (and I don't give a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about the "one license per PC" crap for something so friggen old).

He wants me to help him set up his house with a wireless network and add in a wireless networking card to that laptop ::)  I told him I wouldn't work on that laptop for ANY amount of money and if he wanted it done, go back to the place that he bought it from, and then go to Sam's Club and pick up their Linksys wireless networking setup.  Oh wait, that friggen thing is so old, it doesn't even have a USB port....mebbe they make a serial port version :D

I've seen 500mhz laptops for $200.  I think those guys shoulda worn ski masks, since now he'll be able to identify who robbed him ;)

I gave one similar to that away to some little girl in my apartment complex because I hadn't used it in years.

I used to do that.  We'd clean out old offices, and I'd refurb the older PCs and give them to folks without.

I finally got tired of the trouble calls, and the "Oh, this P2 won't run Doom 3 for little Jonny???" remarks.

Let them eat cake.

I used to do that too until I got sick of the people who expected me to support the thing forever and would get pissed at me for "giving me this piece of crap you won't help me with".
