Title: Hey, can we discuss GBA stuff in the main section?
Post by: Sinner on December 20, 2005, 03:31:11 pm
I have a GBA and a bunch of cartridges.  I hate how difficult it can be to view the screen in certain lighting conditions...I was thinking of getting an old cell phone, and seeing if I could remove the light from it, and then put it in my GBA...I decided to do some research...if I've thought of it, I assume that someone else already has...anyway, I came across something called the Afterburner...looks good...
Are these things any good?
Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative?
Where can I buy?  I'm in Canada, so I assume I'd have to order...

I also saw some flash cartidges...are these any good?
If I have ROM files of games I already own, can I put them all on one flash cartridge and be able to play them?
Is there a menu for this?  Special software?  I've looked for detail, but nothing seems to tell me exactly what I'm looking for maybe I'm looking in the wrong places...
Can anyone help?
Thank you.

Should probably move this to the Consoles section.

But to quickly answer some of your questions. You should get an afterburner or just spring for a micro, they have a brilliant screen.  The only possible downfall of the afterburner is that you have to install it yourself, and some ppl that arent very handy wont do this very well.  I cant speak from expereince, but I have heard lots of good things about the afterburner.  As far as flash carts, yes they are awesome, you can do loads with them.  go here for more info.

Basically, the cart you buy will have client software that interfaces with it to read/write rom images onto the cart, create a loader, which is like a menu, and backup your saves.  I have the EFA it is great.

Dont really have any experience with these, but I have heard some ppl have issues with game saves on them.  I have a GBA movie player, which uses a CF card and plays movies, but i think with a firmware hack you can play games and such with it.

I can heartily vouch for the afterburner.

I had never done anything like that before and I managed it. I had never really soldered before and I managed to do it with my Dads almost industrial soldering iron. You will need a dremel or something similar as you need to hack a small part of the platic body away, don't worry though you cannot see it from the outside.

They really do work exceptionaly well in my opinion, even in the daylight but really excell in the dark where pre-SP gaming was impossible. as TravistyOJ said you may just want to get a Micro or even a SP. I personally wouls go for the GBA and afterburner due to the original GBA's comfort (IMO again) and you also get the sense of satisfaction of doing a mod.

IM not sure about flash carts nowerdays, I had(have) a Flash2Advance with a serial cable but I cannot get it to work anymore. I am going to look into the CF carts though, I must say I haven't heard of them but I have been out of the GBA scene for a while. If you can use propper MB or GB CF cards with the flash carts then that would be incredible. All the carts I know are Megabit or Gigabit (Mb or Gb) not Megabyte or Gigabyte (MB or GB) which are obviously 8 times larger (and I imagine would be alot cheaper
