Just use the WINDOWS BUILD of MAME (official) not the DOS one, or in your case why not just use MAME32.

For the computer you are using, you want a much older version of mame.  Try something like Mame .55

does .55 support USB controllers?
Title: Re: MAME

does .55 support USB controllers?

I'm pretty sure that depends on your Operationg System and not the Mame version.  If I'm right about that, any OS that can use USB controllers will be able to use them in Mame.

Hopefully someone can pop in here and confirm or deny my guess though.

Just thought I'd throw this out there just in case...mame doesn't run snes roms, you'd need a snes emulator to do that.

I use one called MameWah..... very customizable, perfect for use in cabinets and supports any command line emulators.... but it is not the most user friendly to setup though....

I have all the .ini configuration files that I use if ya need them...

PS: I am running (among other emus) MAME and ZSNES from MameWah on a Windows 98 PC.... I just got a USB gamepad for it and am about to try it out tonite!!!

Wow, I thought MAME was the only thing you could use. The bad part is, I don't even know how to use it  :'(

Mamewah is very easy to set up if you use the mamewah config program - http://www.bluecamel.org/2005/02/26/mamewah-config-161/

MAME Setup - www.mameworld.net/easyemu
SNES - I like ZSNES
NES - I like FCE Ultra

Frontends - MAMEwah is good once you learn how to configure it.  I also like Atomic, but not sure if it does multiple emulators.

Hope you get setup with some of the old classics running. MameWah is the best choice for firing up MAME but I reckon if you downladed and installed MAME32, ran a few games and played with the settings it'd help you when you come to install MameWah and have to configure things manually.
MAME32 uses a Windows GUI to quickly change settings so you can see their effect then exit the game and change something else to learn what it does like screen sizes, audio settings, DirectX etc. The MAME binary has a config file that you edit by hand MAMEWah just launches MAME along with the ROM file and depending on what the config file contains depends on how your games look and how well they run.
Good luck!

Just to clarify a bit:

MAME32 - Installs, drop your rom files into rom folder and run mame32.exe play games that are listed in the program.

MAME (Windows Version)- runs from the command prompt you have to put roms into rom folder then issue a command in the command prompt like C:\MAME\mame dkong to play a game.

Frontend - creates a list for your roms for each emulator and when a game is selected from the list it runs the emulator with the selected rom without using the command prompt. Useful for hiding the Windows environment and creating game lists for multiple emulators. MameWah is found to be the easiest to configure by most.

Ok that does help my understanding.

once i install MameWah how do i install MAME, ZSNES and other emulators throught it? MameWah will hide widows so it will look like a "normal" arcade? can i navigate through the on screen game selection by using only the joystick and buttons(i will be rewiring a usb gamepad)?

Hi
MameWah is designed to run in a stand alone arcade cab, using the cab controls to navigate around the menus, select games, etc. The only time you need a keyboard is for initial configuration and on going admin. I have not actually used a hacke USB gamepad, but I can't see why it wont work... Anyone else tried?
It runs in full screen, therefore hiding the windows desktop. You can even get MAME Windows 98 Boot Loader screens, so the Windows logog is not even seen on boot!!! Email me if ya want info on this.
As far as configuration/ setup of the various emulators, it is best to use a tool such as MameWah config (see post by AtomSmasher above for link). If you go to http://www.screenshotarchive.com/downloads_emus.htm you can download emulators that are basically setup to be run in a cab (they exit by "esc" key, setup mame keys as default, etc.). Have a look around there and see what they have....

Anyways, hope that helped

I don't understand why people need a config program to begin with.  It's just a few simple .ini files.

For an older computer like that you might want to look at older versions of mame (as already suggested I believe).  Also for neogeo and cps game look at kawaks, nebula, and neoragex.

Mame uses direct x for input, so if windows can see an input device, mame can.

That PC is plenty for ZSNES. It is plenty for most MAME games as well, up to, and possibly including, Mortal Kombat 3, provided you use an older version of MAME, like in the .5x to .6x range.
