Title: Converting coin mechs to accept .984" tokens
Post by: daikiki on December 10, 2005, 08:20:36 pm
Hey, my Mame tokens just came in today and, wanting to actually use them, I managed to convert my standard quarter mech to fit these tokens with a minimum of effort. Takes about five minutes and doesn't involve gutting the coin mech. If anybody's interested I'd be happy to slap together a little tutorial, perhaps even with pretty pictures. Just let me know.

Maybe you could put your tips (and pics) in this thread here:

I spent some time reading the threads about it here and studying those pictures. Then I disassembled a CoinCo quarter  mech right in front of the computer to learn how it works.

I just want the mechs to accept tokens in addition to quarters. I don't need it to accept pennies or any other coin. So gutting the whole mech was unnecessary. I took a "least damage" approach.

In the end, the most significant change was flattening out the angled bottom piece that would otherwise deflect a token over to the reject chute. And I removed the little plastic 45-degree thing above it that helps that deflection. That's it. The rest of the mech is intact (the cradle and all that stuff) albeit slightly adjusted to be more forgiving. Even if a coin is rejected up on top, it's physically routed to the "accept" chute. And I can reverse the effect by simply bending the deflector back to the original shape.

I still get the correct sound of the coin routing through the mech before dropping into the (loaded) metal coin pan. Such a sweet sound!

I have another one to do so maybe I'll snap some better pics later today or this week.
