I found a cheat on the internet so you could get 255 lives with Mr. Do!. I set out to see if the machine would lock up after the million mark. I never saw any note saying it would, but there are not enough digits to display, so I figured, what the heck, see what happens.
I ran out of men to make it to the million mark, but I was close. ;D

Most games just rollover the score.
I rolled the million mark on Juno First (back in the day) and was very pissed to find out that the score just started over. I should have been #1 in the high score table, but instead I was something like #6
-
Didn't have much to do that day did we?
-
Yup. I was board that day. Tired it again, and did get it to roll over, and it did roll back over to 0. I was hoping to see what happened when I rolled over to 100, but alas, I used my last man on level 99. Just needed on more man. :(
-
then only game I rolled over is Asteroids :P
-
The levels just roll over also. Gets kinda odd when you go over the 100 mark because the letters don't always come out after 5000 points. I have a friend who gets on average 2mil every time he plays, without the 255 guys cheat.

On the Atari 2600, you just stop getting points. Then you just stop getting men.

2 mill without the cheat? WOW. I'm the first to admit that I've never been very good at any of these games, but I just enjoy them. I can't imagine how you could get 2 mill. The bad guy's in the game just run like hell on the higher levels. I guess there are tricks to the game, I just don't know them. :(

After a LOT of play you learn the little techniques that keep you alive. It's about which moves you do that usually work and which you abandon because they get you killed too high a % of the time. Once you master those little techniques, in most of the classic games, you can live indefinitely aside from your mistakes. That is how guys do things like last 2+ days in Star Wars or Berzerk.

Send that pic to Activision for a cool patch!

I'll jump onto this thread with an odd "cheat" experience with Galaga.
I tried that thing in Revision 1 of Galaga where you don't shoot the leftmost enemies and all enemies eventually stop shooting at you.
When I started the game, I inadvertently hit 2 players. I played through both players, concentrating on the player 1 game and just letting the second player get killed pretty quickly each time.
When it was time for high score entry, my second player game with the crappy score was listed right below the player 1 score, above much higher scores.
