Title: Attach coin input to MAME?
Post by: AE35 on December 09, 2005, 10:07:00 am
Hi all! I'm new here!

I'm building my own MAME machine, but I've decided that I really need a coin input that works!

So, would this work with MAME and I-PAC??

Thanks! Glad to be here!

It would work, but it's not exactly arcade-accurate. The Happs price is going to jump up a bunch once you calculate their shipping too.
Do a search on Ebay for coin doors, you'll find several that will be better for your project.

The feature where you put a sample coin in and then it takes only that type of coin is very cool though...

It could certainly be made to work. But Happs will absolutely kill you on the shipping.

Great!

But how would it work? would it be possible to connect the coin
wires from the I-PAC(or whatever output I choose) to the coin mech?

I live in Denmark, so it should be able to do Danish coins: ;D

Thanks!

All mechs work basically the same: when the coin makes it through as a "valid" coin, it trips a switch. You should be able to connect those outputs to the ipac, or any other controller.

<edit>

Actually, looking at the exploded view:

Hi there,

I have the coin mechs on my cab hooked up via an IPAC which it sounds like you are trying to do.  I do not have the same coin mechs but I'm assuming there are wires which would normally be used to hooking up to a real arcade pcb.  I just wired one wire each from one to the '5' key if I remember correctly and the other wires to ground.  I did this a few years ago so I maybe getting something wrong.  It does work though I just tested it again to make sure.  I don't usually put quarters in there unless I'm showing off the cab.    :)

The key to all this, as it seems to have been mentioned, is having the wires which are attached to switches that trigger when a coin engages them.

I believe that the unit you're looking at does have a built in switch. If it didn't, it would be advertised with a three way timing switch. There's no way to set the timing on an external microswitch. These things do require a 12v power supply though.

I can't see any problems using it with an input controller such as iPac. The only issue I do see is that, frankly, these things aren't that pretty. You might be better off contacting some local operators and trying to find some coin mechs that accept kroner. (kroner? Do the danes not like euros?)

Here in the UK I got lucky and got a mars coin mech and board, so far it has performed perfectly when connected to a Jpac (jamma version of Ipac)

They're also sold by Ultimarc so I guess the answer is yes.

On my coin doors the little switch that activates the coins is the same switch that is in the push buttons so you just hook it up the same way you would your buttons.

Yes it is, for older machines and mainly in older cocktails.  It didn't take up precious space that the smaller cocktails needed for the electronics and monitor.  But they were subject to cheating (IE coin on string) so the more complicated mechs became the standard.

I've been thinking of modifying my cabinet with one of these on the bezel.  The coin would shoot out the side to a cup.  One thing that I think adds to arcade experience is only having so many tokens available (since you had to make them last) and trying to beat the count down timer to put in another credit.  This would allow that.

Sirpoonga, of course you're right. I had forgotten all about those things on the old cocktails.
Thanks for the correction.
