Hit the 'modify' button to check out how it's done, then hit your back button so you don't actually change anything.  Cheers.

Dude... believe anything?? you can check Defender 3 out here at Klov

http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=D&game_id=7547] (http://www.macmame.net/klov/defnder3.html)

It's a crazy game. There's also a reference to it at The Games that Times forgot at cinemarcade
http://www.cinemarcade.com/TGTTF/gametime48.html (http://www.cinemarcade.com/TGTTF/gametime48.html)

Anyway, I haven't had time to dump the game. It's pretty rare, but I can't imagine there would be much interest in it if I did.

Yeah, it's funny, but it's super hard to play. After my dad found it in his garage we tried to play it. Took us a while to figure out that it was actually working. It's so difficult that it looks like a bunch of wayward sprites are all over the screen... but turns out that's just the gameplay. It's kind of a collectors item, but even by modern stadards the gameplay is just too complex, so I've yet to find any buyers.

Not as much fun as you might think.  When you coin-up it simply plays the "player killed" sound and sequence 3 times in a row then asks for another quarter. Hard game.  Highest known score rumored to be 2 points, but that may be an urban legend.

Its nice that the only known video of Defender 3 is FINALLY getting exposure. We've been trying to get the word out for the last few years since we found the board. Maybe NOW the mamedevs will actually want me to send the working board to them to get dumped. I think the public reaction for access to such a rare rom would be to great, though and they're afraid of the swamp of rom requests they would receive.

No, Strikeforce was the 4th in the sequence. Since Defender 3 was never released... people just think of Strikeforce as the 3rd in the series. The KLOV link that I posted above has them all in the correct order.

I think we should start an X-Prize type contest.  First one to program a fully functional D3 ROM playable on Mame gets the loot.

How can Strike Force be a sequel since it was made by Midway, and Defender and "Stargate... DEFENDER!!" were made by Williams?
Title: Re: Defender 3 -- some people believe anything
Post by: saint on December 10, 2005, 04:38:01 pm
There's a whole world of prototypes and partially implemented concepts that didn't make it into production (the military Battlezone, the Marble Madness sequel, etc...). I was privy to see a boardset and some sketch drawings of sideart concepts for Defender III, but have never seen it actually put together and working. As I recall the op told me it didn't see the light of day because they decided it was too dang hard.

I don't know if you are playing along with the joke theme of this thread or asking a legitimate question, but either way...

Midway, Williams -- six of one, a half dozen of the other. You can read all about the connections between Bally, Midway and Williams here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midway_Games).

Right EricTrumpet, Defender 3 isn't a REAL game, because it was never released to the public. It's only a myth that it was realeased... it was never released. The only known prototype unit is the one I have sitting in my garage, and it's never been dumped.

Some of the chips on my board are looking a little rough so it's probably time to get it dumped or it might be lost forever. Nobody on the MAME team has stepped up to dump the board after I've sent it around to a few people, so I'm going to dump it myself. I bought a rom dumper online yesterday so I'll see what I can do to get it emulated.

Okay so I have often wondered how "regular people" (that is, not freaky skills gaming gods) do in Defender -- talking about the original coin-op game, with proper controls (no left-right joystick, no autofire or any other cheat).

When I read about tricks like purposely shooting all your humanoids except one, which you then allow to be lifted so you can kill his captor and then carry him around with you for level after level, I am amazed at the skill it would take to pull off such a trick. I can fairly reliably get to the humanoid replacement level (level 5 i guess it is, or is it 6? not sure), but I still have a lot to learn and every once in a while I get pummeled and lose all my lives on level 2 :)

So... what do MOST people get in Defender? My high score is in the 60Ks, 65K or something like that. Am I still a Defender newbie? Or can I kick the average Defender players ass? I have no idea. No frame of reference. I do not know anyone personally who has the motivation to truly excel at the game. So I am kinda alone in "Defenderland."

Eric.

I would say you are above average, but not out of this world.

I, on the other hand, am way below average and have gotten very frustrated trying to get better at this game.

Good Luck dumping (that doesnt sound to good.. does it!).  You never know... you might inspire someone to design a 'Defender III' cab....... mmmmm... now that sounds like a good idea ;)

I have migrated to Stargate and am in the 80-90k range.  That game taunts me it does. I play it more than anything else on my Omega Mame.

I do better at Stargate than Defender points-wise, but that's because I always play the two-credit game with double the lives -- lame I know, but hey it's a freakin' hard game.

I built a desktop controller with button placement specific for Defender and baby, that's the only way to play the game. I am trying to figure out how to work in Defender-specific controls on my cab too. Without exactly the correct buttons, Defender and Stargate are even harder, IMO. Gotta have the controls correct...

I usually get between 150-200k. My skills have deteriorated from 25 years ago. Back then I played quite a bit and was able to turn the score over at a million. I did use the strategy of killing all the men but one or two after every 5th level.

I would only use smart bombs to kill pods and when I was in danger of losing the last man. To kill the orange swarmers, let them pass you and follow them closely. For the purple bombers, try to get in front of them. For the mutants, kill them at the top of the screen. When the baiters come out, try and kill the first one right away, use the hyperspace when it gets too hectic. Also, don't ever lose that last man, kill the ship if you have to.
