I was scheming on how I was going to finish my control panel today when I remembered some stuff that I had on the shelf that would be great for such a purpose.
Envirotex. It's a expoxy resin that you pour on counter tops to give it that thick clear coat type finish. It advertises that one coat of this is equal to 50 coats of polyurethane.
Anyhow I had some partical board sitting there so I gave it a couple of coats of black paint and then a good coat of envirotex on it.
It looks VERY good. I don't know if I can take any pictures that could do it justice.
Has anyone else done this?

I built a bar once and used that on it. It does look very good, especially when used on good wood. The only problem with it is that when it cracks, it tends to "spider-web". The bar I built was in the basement of our fraternity house, so after a few kegs get thrown on it (amongst other things!), it kinda got chipped up. However, it lasted longer than anything else I can think of.
The point of the story is that you would probably have to drill all the holes first, and then somehow try to keep the epoxy from running into them while it cures.
