sh*t just bought Colin Mcrae 2005 rally game and when i try to play it on my V1.50 PSP it says that i need to upgrade the firmware...
I also heard that the new GTA needs 2.something firmware
is there a workaround for this?
I dont really want to update from 1.50 because would mean wont be able to run homebrew any more!
now getting worried that all new games are going to require 2.x in

They are working on cracking the 2.0 requirements for GTA and are supposedly close from what I've read on various PSP sites. The only thing that has been added from 1.5 to 2.0 as far as PSP capabilities are the added web browser and some theme enhancements. It was mostly an attempt to discourage the home brew scene.

i wish you could have multiboot versions of the firmware - for example when startup PSP a utility would ask which version of firmware you wanted....maybe someday my wish will come true???

I think you can play Colin McRae using a version changer, but GTA and Socom are the two big games that can only be played on 2.0+.
But you can downgrade from 2.0 to 1.5 later if you want, and you can run a lot of good homebrew stuff on 2.0.

If you really want to play a newer game, you can upgarde to 2.0 and just downgrade later. However, you shouldn't do this often as you run the risk of bricking our PSP. Also, you can ONLY do this with 2.0. If you upgrade to 2.01 or 2.50, that's that... there's no going back.
I'm still hoping that they crack GTA as it's really the only new game I want to play. They've already cracked a few 2.0 games to work with 1.5 like The Hustle, so hopefully they can do the same for GTA.
And for the record, you can run A LOT of homebrew on 2.0 now. About the only thing you can't run that means anything to most people is the UMD Loader. You can play a large number of emulators and homebrew on 2.0

i was actually going to buy some original games including GTA and Pro Evo 5. now i am worried...dont want to have to wait for a cracked version and play from a memorycard...perversly this requirement is preventing me from buying legit software and forcing me to use illegal cracks...
is this just a way of sony to force users to upgrade their firmware and kill off the homebrew crowd?
what about owners that dont have a PC or network connection, how are they suppose to update the firmware?

Yup... exactly.

New games have the firmware on teh UMD as an upgrade. If you buy GTA, the 2.0 Firmware is on the UMD and you can't play the game until you upgrade.

GTA:LCS uses firmware 2.0. I know that Socom and The Hustle also use 2.0. I'm not sure about Pro Evo, but I haven't heard of any games that shipped with 2.01 or 2.50, so my guess would be that is 2.0 also. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before games ship with 2.01 or 2.5.

Not sure, but you might find something on pspupdates.com. At the very least, you'll find some posts about which games won't work.

Do a search on pspupdates before you buy any particular game to make sure you understand what firmware it requires.
Before I unshrink-wrapped GTA, I manually upgraded to 2.0 after ensuring that I could go back to 1.5 (and had the software and knew how to do it).
But then I ended up replacing many of my emus with versions that work under 2.0. So I really have no reason to go back to 1.5 any more. But I can if I want.
