Just when you though DC had sucked in its last dying breath, Milestone is reporting it will port its new Naomi vertical shooter, "Rajirugi" to the DC. I wonder how they are going to work the licensing since Sega officially shutdown all license deals for DC earlier this year.
If things go well, maybe we will see Sega change its DC stance, and G.Rev start porting its recently released shooters for Naomi.
As reported by Insert Credit today.

Playasia has opened preorders, with release date set for Feb 16, 2006.

Awesome!
Can't friggin wait.... While I haven't had the chance to play it on NAOMI yet. I have seen some movie captures of it and the cell shaded looks to it looked really sweet.

There's one I haven't seen yet. Was that cell-shaded? As a fan of toony classics like Pop'n Twinbee, I've gotta check that one out!

god i love my Dreamcast.
of all my consoles its still the best.
DC will never die.

i just checked out the vids at http://www.mile-stone.co.jp/product/radirgy/radi_download.html ...i'm not sure that i like the cell shading look. it makes everything flat and cartoony. that said, i'll most likely buy and play it anyways.

reminds me of the doujin happa64

Yeah, I wasn't sold on the look at first, but from watching the movies you can see it gets pretty manic, and with that many bullets flying around, a high contrast simple look is welcomed. ;D
Also, its very oddly themed to be a cellphone game...so simpler graphics.

Hey, I found a link at a site I visit often of the Dreamcast being re-released with this new shooter, check it out here: http://cq-ef.net/news/483/
It'd be great to see a mini dreamcast be released, I think it would sell really well. :D

SEGA were notorious for releasing too early, and having all of their competitors release slightly better systems for cheaper a year later. MegaDrive (vs SNES), Saturn (vs PSX) and DreamCast (vs XBox/PS2). All great systems that were eclipsed by competitors consoles a short time after.
A re-release of a cheaper mini-Dreamcast would be great. I think the DC can still hold it's own against the PS2 and XBox. Even moreso if the new 400MHz SH-4 chips that are being used in the automotive industry are used in place of the original 200MHz versions, retain backward compatibility while allowing for even more complex games and graphics.
If this is all true, and they appear for the right price, I'll buy one for sure, even if I already have an original DC.

i was trapped in an n64 closet for a while. i thought the ps2 came out in 2002 a year after the gamecube and the dreamcast in 1998. i thought the ps2 was a relatively new system.

The point I'm trying to make is that sega seem to release consoles "in between" everyone else. Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo have been releasing within 6 or so months of each other, making Sega look like old tech because it's a few years out of the cycle each time, despite the fact that the systems are still good, and have a worthy library of games (after all, great hardware is nothing without good games).
-
we can pray, but didnt sega already stop making their first party Games like in the early 2000's? i doubt they would go for another console release after releasing over 20+ games on other consoles
-
I've never really gotten into the DC despite being a Saturn freak... which is ironic because I have a DC kiosk collecting dust in the basement. I really like shooters, too... what are the good shooters?

But the point is that Sega don't have to re-release the Dreamcast themselves they can simply licence the technology to someone else. From their perspective it is guaranteed income at zero risk. They've already licenced Megadrive technology to Radica and perhaps others (Jakks?) so why shouldn't they do the same with the Dreamcast?

Here's a few
Ikaruga
Border Down
Psyvariar 2
Shikigami no shiro 2
Chaos Field
Zero Gunner 2
Any one of those shmups are good enough to warrant a dedicated cab with a DC in it. (well maybe not chaos field.....)

On the licensing front, don't forget that the Genesis 3 and later Pico units were manufactured by Majesco.
As much as I love the system, I don't expect to see a return of the DC :(
