Title: date games (nes)
Post by: mmmPeanutButter on November 29, 2005, 11:16:06 am
I just made one of the modded dreamcast into an NES (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=32940.0;all). (the link isn't mine)

Anyways, I have a lady coming over tonight to play.  She's really competitive and I'm looking for suggestions of some good head-to-head games.  Puzzle games are fun.

I'm going to destroy her!   ;D

Any suggestions?

Can you play Atari 2600 games on that thing?  How about some Custer's Revenge?   ;D

Sry, couldn't resist.

...I'm assuming you are looking for NES suggestions vs. Dreamcast?

Try Tengen's Tetris (http://www.classicgaming.com/rotw/ttetris.shtml). It has a good competitive mode, but also has an awesome cooperative play. The one thing I like about cooperative play is that you can get competitive with it (e.g., if you both have a "long" piece to place, and there's one good spot for it, you can shoot down past the other player, flip the piece into position, and then drop your piece into place leaving the other player in a lurch because they are 1/2-way down and their plan was destroyed.

I'm thinking that cooperative play may be better than beating her up at Double Dragon or something like that.

There was this great game called artillery dual for coleco.  Does anybody know if there is a game like this on NES?

(It was a game where each person had rocket things on their own side.  When it was your turn you would select the trajectory and the power and fire at the other person.  Wind also changed.)

I'm just playing NES games.

I used to love to play Rampart against my buddies. (At least I think the NES version had 2 player play?)

The best thing you can do is let her pick the games that she wants to play.

The ones where she goes 'I used to love this game! I played it all the time as a kid'.

And for heaven's sake let her win atleast... once....  ;)

What are you getting yourself into, playing games with a date?!

If you always win, she'll feel inferior and you won't get any.

If you let her win, she'll think you're a wuss and you won't get any.

If you try to keep it 50/50, you might actually lose more than her, and then she'll really think you're a wuss, and you won't get any.

If it does end up being 50/50 she'll think you're one of those sensitive guys trying to keep everything fair and even for both sexes, and you still won't get any!

Any way you slice it, you're not getting any playing video games.

Well, I couldn't find Tengen's Tetris (does anybody know what it would be called?  maybe I just don't have it).  We started out with Dr. Mario.  I kicked her ass pretty bad.  But then I convinced her to let me penalty myself and then I kept winning but then she won and decided to play another game.

We played some Family Feud and Wheel of Fortune.  You really have to think like you're still in the 80's.

I played some barbie.  It sucked pretty bad.

I'm going to keep playing games and then I'm going to make separate folders on the NesterDC disc with different types of games (head-to-head games, for example).

But I guess the games were the exciting part.

(besides the nes games, I didn't score)   ;D

The game is Tetris and it is made by Tengen. It wasn't produced for very long, as Tengen found out they did not own the rights to make a console version of the game. Rather than face legal issues with other companies involved, they teamed with Nintendo to acquire the rights. The Nintendo version soon replaced the Tengen version, but was nowhere near as good as the original Tengen version.

The rom can be found in the link from pmc at the beginning of the thread.

Great... I didn't see it at the bottom.  I downloaded it... I think I'll be waiting until the 10th (http://www.sch3rz0.com/nesterdcse/) before I make a new cd anyways.

Anticipation may be another decent choice - it's a board game that kinda combines several different little mini-games. Not sure if it was a real boardgame or not, but I remember playing it a couple of years ago with my wife. It's not the most exciting and you probably won't play it a ton, but you'll probably get some laughs.

edit: puzzle games = yoshi and yoshi's cookie have head to head. however if you creamed her with dr. mario's pills, you may do same with these.
Bubble Bobble has a co-op mode.

If I recall, my copy of NesterDC has Tengen's Tetris listed right under Nintendo's Tetris but the ROM name is something like "Tetris2" or something like that. Whatever it is, it doesn't have "Tengen" in the ROM name -- but it's obvious.
