Title: XBOX HTPC Questions
Post by: spiffyshoes on November 26, 2005, 11:17:49 am
Ok, I'm new to the xbox scene and need some info on how to transfer files to my Xbox Hard Drive.

use slayer's evoX auto installer to format and unlock your drive.

FTP really is much faster though.  I do it all the time, and its a lot faster than loading from CD/DVD and much less hassle than having to take the xbox apart every time I want to add something.

EDIT:  I was totally wrong haha.  you can't put the drive in an external enclosure

Other than direct transfer from a disc, your only option is going to be FTP.

The Xbox uses a file system (fatx), that windows does not recognize (or any other OS for that matter), so you can have the drive unlocked, and actually see it is there, but do nothing with it, other than format it to a compatible file system, which of course makes it useless for Xbox.

I was the one to recommend streaming, and I recommend it yet again. FTP'ing is going to require a network connection anyway, and unless you are only planning on putting a few things on the Xbox every now and then, then moving it to location for transfer is going to be a pain.

You don't have to buy the Xbox wireless adapter specifically. It is just a regular ethernet bridge, so any other would work just as well. A quick froogle search for wireless ethernet bridge turned up some for much less than $100.

Here is a Linksys one at buy.com, from that search, for only $32.99. (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10351885&SearchEngine=Froogle&SearchTerm=10351885&Type=PE&Category=Comp&Gad=0&dcaid=17379)

Sweet thanks for the link to the Linksys adapter that sounds perfect for me.  I'm not an expert on wireless networks though.  My PC has a wireless card in it because the motherboard/case came with one but I don't have a wireless network or anything.  Am I correct in assuming that I can just use this Linksys Wireless bridge to conect directly to my PC's wireless card?

yikes, I was totally thinking of the PS2, and you even mentioned it..... sorry.  You can see a PS2 drive in windows, not an xbox one.

I'm an idiot lol  :P

Yep

You would need to set up your PC's card to run in ad-hoc mode.

A little googling will get you the directions on how.
