So I installed a new furnace last night. I replaced the old behemoth in the basement with a cute little high efficiency. I say cute, because that is the only nice thing I have to say about it. I have never done anything like that before and I hope not to again any time soon. Why worry about heat when I could be building my next cp? ;D
The way I figure it, they say natural gas is going to get crazy expensive this winter, so I hope gaining 30% efficiency is worth it! I think it is, otherwise I woulda just kept the 2g's. I can't believe how much they told me it would cost to have it installed! :-X
Oh well, now that I can feel my toes again, back to the games.............................................

You installed it completely by yourself? Next post we will see is

I could probably build a house if I had to. The thing is pretty self explanatory. The hardest part was making sure I was meeting all the local codes. Pretty strict and for good reason! :police:

but the real question on everybodies mind is if you used plexi for the CP ???
-
Not on this one! ;) Just pvc glue and purple primer.

Heating companies charge INSANE amounts. Im building a new house without a contractor, so my parents hire everyone and help out and crap, and I was talking to the heating guys (I talk to 'em all, interesting trades really) and he said that just to change the hot water tank, it takes him 20 minutes but he charges like 150 bucks to do it, just cuz thats the market, and it goes straight to his pocket.... its crazy what these guys can get away with...

That's because people think it'd take them all day, or at least considerably more than 20 minutes, plus they're afraid they're gonna blow up their houses, etc.
The primary reason people are willing to pay that much is simple.
$150 is nothing compared to the lawsuit if the thing is effed up and leaks all over, destroying their house.
$150 vs. several thousand dollars? Sure honey, let's pay the $150.
And it really IS a 20 minute job too. Makes me glad I often can't afford a lot of stuff and HAVE to do the job myself ;D

If I tried to install a furnace, you'd be able to find where I live by following the mushroom cloud to the crater.

It's worth it to have the new furnace. I swapped out my 30 year old furnace for a 96 AFUE model, and it has definitely made a huge difference. There are no more cold spots in the house, and my wife now cranks the heat, and the bill has actually been a little less. Best investment I have made in the house since I bought it.
Next I want to get one of those wall mount instant-on water heaters. I would love to take more than a 20 minute shower sometimes...

If those work as well as they seem to, I'll buy one when my water heater dies. It can barely support a 10-15 minute shower.

Make sure you run the numbers. My buddy got one that CAN and DOES run out of hot water.....technically. If they're doing wash, running the dishwasher, and both showers are running, something has to be shut off.
Yeah, it sounds like that'd be an impossibility. 4 kids (3 of them teenagers) and all the various crap needing to be done makes this a once-a-week occurrence at his house. They have to not run the wash while showers are being taken to avoid this.
If you have less kids, or NO kids, it's the bomb-diggety.

Funny you should mention water heaters. I installed one of those as well. The whole idea was that I am finishing the basement and wanted an extra three feet. I believe I caused a minor spike in the solder markets once they realized what a demand I had caused. ;D It don't leak damn it!!! I have to tell friends that there really is copper pipes there.

Ha! Luxury. As it is I can run one of the showers or do laundry. You can never do two at the same time (not if you expect any hot water anyway. My water heater sucks pig rectum.
No kids at Chez Stingray so the instant on water heater is sounding better and better. Not that I'll replace the crappy one until it dies.

I'm both lazy and cheap. I intend to keep it alive as long as possible.

My current house has an interesting mix. A furnace original to the house (1953 Lennox), and a tankless gas water heater, that I believe is less than 5 years old (I've had the house for 2 1/2 years) I can't wait to get rid of the furnace, but replacing windows, storm doors, and putting a new roof on are delaying that upgrade.
I haven't had any issues with running out of hot water when running laundry, dishwasher, and shower - but I also have the heater set pretty high, since it's just Me and the wife. The only real downside is that since it is tankless, you have to wait a bit longer for the water to get to temp, but otherwise I highly recommend them.
