Title: ArcadeVGA & standard PC monitors
Post by: Bones on November 24, 2005, 02:11:38 am
I have just had a call from the computer shop who is building my cab PC. I supplied them with my Arcade VGA card for installation at the same time.

The guy claims that with this card installed he is unable to get a display on a standard computer monitor. I kind of expected this but can anyone confirm this is normal?

The main reason I am concerned is because the card had a hard life in transit due to not being packaged properly as per the below pic. I just want as much piece of mind that the card is not faulty and is only behaving the way it is intended.

Thanks guys,
Bones

By default, an ArcadeVGA only outputs CGA signals (~15.7 KHz Hsync rate), so a computer monitor won't work straight away (30+ KHz Hsync signal required).

The card is designed to be plugged on a SCART TV, an arcade monitor, or some other kind of RGB monitor compatible with CGA resolution 0.7 Vpp video.

The AVGA's "Trisync" patch frees up VGA+ modes so you can use a 30+ KHz non-interlaced display. It is also said that once you have enabled this, if you reinstall the AVGA driver you will be back to your previous state (all modes timed at ~15.7 KHz), but the thing will resort to 31+ KHz Hsync modes for VGA+ if connected to a DDC enabled suitable display (a PC monitor).
With this trick you can still use your CGA display with full safety, and be able to show the windows desktop on a PC monitor.

Cheers

He will not get a picture on a standard PC monitor using an arcadevga card.

arcadevga outputs signals at 15khz which is outside the range supported by 99.9% of computer monitors

the simplest way of getting it set up is to drop in a generic video card while installing the operating system / sound cards etc, then once the computer is up and running replace it with the arcadevga and connect it to the arcade monitor.

then all that is left to do is install the drivers for the arcadevga (which can be done easily)

one word of warning..... do not use any other type of ATI card as the generic card while setting it up, if you do you will run into problems installing the drivers for the arcadevga.

EDIT: I am too slow, Barkuti came up with another way around it for you.

You can't see, but I am mooning you two freaks right now with all the aggression I can muster.  8)

And all is cool. Picked up the new PC today and after some initial problems, I got the card to talk to the monitor.

i don't see a focus buuton on my monitor.
It'll be on the back of the monitor, on the chassis. There will be two knobs, one above the other near the big cord that goes to the picture tube.

Example:
