Free. Space Tactics cockpit. Needs to be picked up in CT (06419). Will
not ship or part out. The game plays blind. Motor appears to work. It's
heavy, bring a friend.

Motor?
From KLOV: "The alien ships attack in a dizzying 3-D pattern, but what sets this game apart is that instead of moving your cross-hairs around the screen, the entire screen is motorized and moves to fit within your cross-hairs! It gives the effect of a very large screen with smooth scrolling."

I picked this up on Saturday - love it! Thanks 1hookedspacecadet - even though I'm on RGVAC, I somehow missed this one. It was a 2 1/2 hour drive there, but worth it. I love the sideart alone. This is definitely one of the more unique games out there, as far as cabinet design goes.
The game itself kind of sucks, basically Space Invaders with a Gorf shield, and a little mix of Missile Command. However, MAME doesn't do it justice when it comes to the lasers shooting at the ships: it is actually generated by a bank of LED's, not on screen. The look of the LED's alone is much better than what is displayed by MAME. You have the LEDS's behind a plastic diffuser, which is pretty much the same as the plastic you would see on a drop down ceiling that covers the fluorescent lights. Plus, the lasers are larger then get smaller as they head towards the center of the screen. This gives it a streaming effect, like they are accelerating towards the target.
As far as the display system goes, it is a funky setup: The monitor sits below, facing a "mirror" (which is actually partially see-through). The laser effect is created by the LED's behind the mirror, and the two images combine on the mirror, to give you the game image, and the lasers together. The monitor and the mirror are motorized, and will adjust, depending on the movement of the yoke, which is basically a four way joystick controlled by leaf switches.
There's a small ultraviolet light in there that reflects off some cardboard space art, and looks spectacular, all in all gives a great environmental feel.
The part where this game really shines is the sound effects. Unfortunately MAME does not emulate the sound yet, but to give you an idea how it sounds, it reminds me of old 50's scifi movies. In particular, the sounds you find on the 1956 classic Forbidden Planet. The sound quality is also fairly good. There are two speakers - one above the display and one in the seat. This will be getting a speaker upgrade, I'm thinking of putting stereo above the display area, and a sub in the seat.
Time to whip out the checkbook!
Once I get going on this, I'll setup a website with pics. I wonder if the wife will mind if I lock myself away in the garage for a month or so...

Awesome! Let's see some pics. How was the collector, did he show you the arcade?

Congrats, I really like the look of the cabinet. Even if the game suxs the cabinet sure makes up for it.

Awesome!

I LOVE space tactics... and your right, mame without sound stinks... I still play it here and there and completely have the sounds going in my head.
I didn't realize that they played so many games moving the monitors around. kinda cool, but I bet its hard to maintain.
Anyway, ask around at mame forum and see if anyone there would be interested in closeup photos of the sound board (or boards in general). I would LOVE to see this one emulated...
heck, record some and maybe some samples could come from it one day.

Wow, this is cool. That guy is an hour away from me, so I sent him a line to find out if it's still availible. I don't know when I'd get around to working on it since my house doesn't have much space (we might be moving into a bigger one sometime though), so I'll probably have to keep it stored away. I definately would love to have a sit down cockpit cab to play around with though, so this would be a godsend. ;D

I can definitely say he doesn't have it anymore. You forgot to read the posts in this topic. I refer you to 5 above this one...
Sorry!
Well... Not quite so sorry. ;) I'll get some pics up soon so you can live vicariously. I plan on taking it all apart and restoring what I can. What I can't, will get replaced.
