How big are they?

I'm tyring to find tokens about the size of the tokens in your SIG. Similar to an Aussie 20c piece around 28mm. All the arcade machines over here are usually preset for this sized coin, so any smaller coins usually fall through.

I'd be very interested if they were close to the size that I mentioned.

I'm definitely in for at least 200 brass.

For those of you asking if these will work in your coin door please see this thread:

Here is the short answer:

i'd be a maybe.  I already have them in nickel, but wouldn't mind some brass.   I'm just not sure I need another 200 of em.

If you did like a 50 or 100 set, i'd almost certainly get that.

I saw a post around here somewhere where someone successfully modded the plastic Happ coin mechs to accept tokens.

Hi everyone

This is my first post here and this topic made me register.

I'd like 200 of these tokens - how much to ship to New Zealand?
Title: Re: Would you buy BRASS MAME tokens if I re-ran them?
Post by: aumameman on November 18, 2005, 07:15:15 pm
The tokens are about the same size as an Aussie/New Zealand 10c coin but a bit thinner.

Im in for another 200 Brass Mame tokens.

Here is a comparison of size of the token compared to a NZ 10c coin and a US QUARTER

yes, I'd take 200 in brass.

I'd be REALLY interested in a run of the 2004 BYOAC as well - those were a great design  (and I hadn't caught the MAME bug yet).  None cooler IMHO...

No problem.  I had the same issue about a year ago when the mame tokens were originally in production but lucky for me I have a US Quarter so I knew roughly the size of the token.

I am new here - Hello all and welcome to my first post.

I am wondering about the MAME tokens and I had a few questions. If they have been hashed over in the past, I am sorry.

1) Why the .984 size? I understand they are the most common, but the .900 fit the older machines. I understand the mecks are going to have to be swapped out no matter what. But in old midway boxes (Pac-man - Galaga - gorf) the coin will not physically fit into the silver coin slot (see pic). Happ does not make a replacement that accepts the 25mm coin. So your only option is to Drummel / rotozip, or hacksaw the slot

cscon115,  no offense taken.  I am always torn when people ask for more generic tokens because there are a lot of (very) generic tokens out there already.  That, combined with the fact that I only get a few such requests, and with the minimun orders from the mint, it just seems like it would be risky.  I'll give some thought to it though, maybe there is a way to creatively serve the 'vintage'crowd.

As for token size, I honestly cannot forsee making anything other than .984"  It is widely accepted as the standard. The modificaiton to the Bally/Midway slot is very minimal from what I hear.  It would be illegal to make tokens excactly the size of a quarter, and these are as close as it gets with the mint I use.

Thanks for the input.

I used a dremmel on a couple of coin doors to widen them a bit. took about 20 seconds and unless you look closely, you can't even tell it was done.
Title: Re: BRASS MAME tokens - More available, ORDERING OPEN.
Post by: cscon115 on November 24, 2005, 04:55:21 pm
Yeah,

PER THE DOOR- I know the mod is minimal - but I have restored cars in the past and I have learned to NEVER EVER modify a part. I just can't do it. I have the ability, but something inside stops me from modding the coin slot. It would be like adding arms to David, or putting a hat on the Mona Lisa. I may end up getting a whole new coin door and put the original in storage.

PER THE SIZE (.984 vs .900)- If I get a new door, the size no longer matters! There are aftermarket doors that do not have the size restrictions the original doors have.

PER THE GENERIC DESIGN -  I understand the costs involved with cutting new dies and the run of tokes. It is not cheap and not something to jump into! But if this helps... I would like a generic token that shows the home arcade and celebrates the restoration and home arcades. Other generics just have an eagle and no cash value. No real fun there. In fact - the just plain stink.

Maybe we could take a vote and see if there is any interest in a generic design? I would like to see a slogan like, "reclaiming your youth - one token at a time!" As I said before - I like the game not over back and the BYOAC 05 front. If these could be married (sans the MAME) I think it would be pretty cool.

Thanks!
Dan

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if many quarter mechs can be adapted for .900" tokens as they can for .984"?

Just purchased 100.  I really don't have a need for 200.  The kids would just loose them or take them to Chuck e Cheeses just like I find those in my coin drawer.

Thank you very much for bringing these back!

Title: Re: BRASS MAME tokens - More available, ORDERING OPEN.
Post by: aumameman on November 27, 2005, 12:13:35 am
I think there are too many "generic" style tokens out on the market already.  I dont think you'll find the support needed to produce "generic" custom tokens.
Title: Re: BRASS MAME tokens - More available, ORDERING OPEN.
Post by: quarterback on November 27, 2005, 03:58:51 am
You should also keep in mind that the design process is a little more complicated than a single person coming up with a single idea and then the coins get made.  No offense intended, but there are almost as many design ideas as there are people on this board.  It's not like the BYOAC tokens appeared out of thin air because one person came up with the "perfect" concept.   You'll need a lot more people interested in generic tokens before somebody's willing to invest the time and money into getting thousands and thousands of them made.

Santoro - you have been the creator and the guy who seems to be selling these so I will default to you. Obviously, if you are going to make and sell - you have to know you are not going to lose money on the project. I certainly will not do it, I work 80+ hrs a week at my own company!

It seems a few of you are missing the point. Nobody likes the dogs / clowns / dragons/ and other Cr^p that is out there for generic tokens.

I am trying to see if there is any interest in a token that would fit more than just the MAME community.
Title: Re: BRASS MAME tokens - More available, ORDERING OPEN.
Post by: pmc on November 27, 2005, 06:47:06 pm
I just modified one of my mechs to take tokens. Worked like a champ with a Chuck-E-Cheese token so I ordered a batch of 100 brass MAME tokens. I don't like the 2005 BYOAC design quite as much and the 2004's are obviously not available. The MAME ones are quite nice.

Maybe a re-run of the 2004 BYOAC design as a 2006 (re-issue) token would make sense? There seems to be demand here (the design is awesome afterall).

On a similar note, anyone want to trade fifty 2004 tokens?

It seems a few of you are missing the point. Nobody likes the dogs / clowns / dragons/ and other Cr^p that is out there for generic tokens.

I am trying to see if there is any interest in a token that would fit more than just the MAME community.  If you MAME / NEO-GEO / or RESTORE you are preserving the past. Even though I restore - I still respect the Mame folks. If not for MAME many games would have been lost to history.

It doesn't seem as if ANYONE has missed your point based on the answers given.  A generic token simply has less appeal and/or cache than something specifically "branded" to the reason they're here in the first place, namely, MAME and BYOAC.

Having "generic" tokens would require a far FAR wider reaching advertisement to make it worthwhile to produce the small yet costly run the mint requires.

What you seem to be missing is the fact that those "other" people you're speaking of HAVE TO FIND THESE THINGS IN ORDER TO HAVE AN INKLING THAT THEY MIGHT WANT TO BUY THEM.  Please, explain HOW those who aren't "in this community" would EVER find out about them....doesn't it stand to reason that they'd have to be part of this community?  If so, then it's up to THEM, if they see the need, to do a "generic" token, since it requires no assistance from anyone here other than a vote to see what generic images they'd like best.

You've also got economy of scale.  Santoro simply isn't going to broadcast to the world on the off chance he MIGHT sell the entire run (or else he's have to include that in the price, driving it up, making it less desireable) and clearly, as others have stated here, the demand for generic tokens IN THIS MARKET simply isn't enough to warrant consideration.

You're not causing a "firestorm", you're simply NOT looking at the responses given as valid reasons NOT to consider a generic token.

The lame "generic" tokens you state that are out there are what YOU'VE seen.  If you've ever actually checked out a token site, you can easily get whatever you want made.  I've SEEN quite a few existing dies they've already got which simply don't fit under your "dog/cat/heart/cake" crap.  If the demand was there, it'd have been done already.  Period.

I am sorry if I have caused a small storm in the MAME community by suggesting the removal of the MAME name from the token.

Nah, if you wanna see a real storm, look at the political threads in 'Everything Else' around November last year.

cscon115,

For the 2005 BYOAC tokens, there was a lot of art submitted and the BYOAC community voted on what we wanted as the front and back of the token. PixelHugger won for both sides, because his art work rocks! Check out his long time work in progress on his cab and workshop floor. I love that floor!

Well today it's December 7 and I am getting a little worried that the coins are not going to show up. :'(
I have entered in the tracking number and it just tells me the date the package was shipped.  Hopefully the post office is just busy because of the holidays and the coins arrive tomorrow.
If they don't arrive in the near future I'm wondering what  I should do? ???

Got the coins in the mail today.  Thankyou ;D
