Title: win98 mouse question
Post by: PetitMorte on November 15, 2005, 06:05:30 pm
Sorry to bother with a OS question, but my win98 install is doing something weird, and I thought I'd ask here quickly.

my Win98SE won't boot without a mouse plugged into the mouseport on the Motherboard.

I have the keyboard encoder (KeyWiz 1.5Max) plugged into the keyboard port, and on the one control panel, the trackball plugs into the mouseport.

I just created a second panel that doesn't have a mouse device, and windows refuses to boot unless I take a spare mouse and plug it into the motherboard.  Windows starts to load, gives the Win98 splash screen for a sec, then spits an error about being unable to load a driver for the file system!  Then says it's safe to turn my PC off and politely turns itself off.

... plug a mouse in, boots up right as rain.

As soon as I can trade up to a MB/processor that will happily handle XP, I'll do that, but in the meantime, this is just annoying.  Any ideas?

Thanks.

I do not know how to help you on this. I can just conferm 98 will look for a mouse.

I just had a mouse hooked up doing nothing. never had 98 going long
XP came out the same time I started into PC's
well windows ME ( and we shal not talk about that  :-[ )

It sounds like there is a fault with the driver.

Try uninstalling the mouse in the device manager then reboot without the mouse in.

Can you boot into safe mode without the mouse plugged in?

(Start up PC, hold down left control key until you get the startup menu and choose safe mode)

f8 works also instead of control, just hit it a bunch after the bios stuff.
