Title: How fast does my PC need to be? Gauntlet DL
Post by: mamerJ on November 15, 2005, 09:02:35 am
I'm trying to use a 1.5 with 768 ram with Mame32, Gauntlet Dark Legacy will barely moves, Area 51 is sluggish.

It doesn't run on any hardware that exists...  even close... they think 10-15ghz.

There is a chance it will never happen since multi-cores don't help mame at all... and both intel and amd are moving to more cores instead of faster clock speed.

Run an older version of Mame for Area 51.  My AMD1600+ running Mame.62 has no problem with Area 51 at all.

Don't know anything about GDL, though.

I was running MAME.88 on a Centrino 1.7MHz, and I had no problems with it...I'm not sure how it would compare to a desktop of the same CPU speed, but I assume it's slower...I know there was an occasional lag, when I used the laptop on the battery, but I just assumed it was the machine being stepped down do to power saving...

Oh, it has 1GB of RAM...

Some of the problems I was having with slow games went away with a better graphics card.  I installed a Radeon 9550 (something like that) with 256 megs and 4 pipes... just a suggestion.

MAME makes pretty much zero use of the awesome power of your Radeon 9550 card.  MAME is unable to use the 3d capabilities of modern vid cards.  You might have seen a performance increase due to installing a card that does it's own processing & has it's own memory, instead of stealing computing power from your cpu or stealing memory from your system memory like some cheap onboard video does.  But a Radeon 7000 will do just as well.  Or a Savage S4, for that matter.

MAME is sped up by using a faster processor, more memory, and by using the oldest MAME version that will play the games you want.  Also by not running other apps in the background- even Windows, if you can manage it.  But Guantlet Dark Legacy still won't work.

Thanks,  I bought the card for Halflife 2 and just happen to notice the performance improvement with these games.  I do not know what uses what, or why it is faster, but now it is in another machine and I noticed the games slowed down after I removed it from the cab.  So, I have been thinking about getting another one.  I should be able to pick one up for about 100 dollars, but I will looking into the 7000 if there is a good price difference.
