Title: JAMMA audio out to TV?
Post by: Adeptus on November 14, 2005, 11:17:37 pm
I'm building my own shoestring-budget Supergun... I think I have worked out all the components I need EXCEPT the audio side of things.

JAMMA audio out is amplified, so if I connect it directly to a TV or stereo, something's gonna blow, isn't it?  :(

So... is there a way of limiting the output level from the JAMMA, to a safe level?
(other than fiddling with the JAMMA volume settings... I don't want to blow something up if I forget to adjust a new board...)

If not... what sort of speakers should I use?

You need what is called a "line out converter" typically found in the car stereo department. It takes a speaker level input and drops the level down to line level to feed an amplifier.

Try these:

Radio Shack # 12-1338 Line output converter $20 (overpriced)

MCM Electronics (www.mcminone.com) has these:

# 60-410 Line output converter (non adjustable) $3.17

$ 60-415 Line output converter (adjustable) $4.13

# 60-480 Line output converter (isolated & adjustable) $9.28

Thanks for that :)

Did a search for "line output converter" in Australia... couldn't find any apart from eBay...
Looked at the MCM items, that third one is labelled on the actual item as an "Impedance convertor".

Did a search for that & found a very similar box here: http://www.autoshop.com.au/results.php?criteria=nr-100
With international postage, this probably works out cheaper for me (at AU$15.75) than the US$3.17 one... ::)

If Dick Smith Electronics is still there in Australia, they might have one. Look in some local businesses that install car stereo systems. I'm sure they would use these devices and might sell you one.

Yeah DSE is still around... they are owned by the same people as Tandy these days (still weird seeing DSE-branded items in Tandy...)
Didn't find anything in their online catalog, but maybe the people in-store will be able to help.
