Lexan is a brand name, and home depot carries it. I did not see any at lowes, but I bet they have something similar (different name).

Any big box home improvent store or even most smaller hardware stores should sell it. Craft stores are another option.

I think Lucite is another name for it if you are looking at Home Depot...

In NYC, there are plastic shops also... have all sorts of lexan, plexiglass stuffs....
maybe if you let us know where you are... someone here might actually pin-point you to some shop nearby...

which location typically has the lowest prices on lexan? (home depot, local shop, etc??)

This is kind of off-topic, but why would a person choose Lexan over some of the other "lesser" brands (crystallite, I think is one)?
I was told that Lexan is super durable but scratches real easy.
I picked up a 32 x 44 piece of Lexan at Home Depot this weekend for around $37, but now I am second guessing using it for my control panel cover.
What type of material out there like Lexan is durable yet doesn't scratch as easily?

Lexxan is less brittle and should scratch less than the cheaper variants of plexiglass like crystallite. Plexiglass has a tendency to shatter or crack when machining it if your not carefull.
If you have plexi that is scratched they make scratch remover for it. Its easy to find in automotive stores because its used for cleaning clear windows on convertibles. Its not going to remove deep scratches but it does a good job with scuffs from normal wear.

The downside of a material that doesn't scratch as easy is that its more brittle. Normal Plexi fits into this category. Its terribly hard to drill 20+ holes into without cracking. Lexan is far easier to work with and its stronger (ie. more flexible and resists impacts better before breaking) but this also makes it softer and more prone to scratches.
In a home environment it will be fine. If not? Well its not like you haven't built it once before. Maybe in a year or two you'll have to do it again.. no biggie. Lexan is by far the better choice. More expensive? Not if it takes you 3 sheets of plexi before you don't get a crack......

yes.. but I don't think it's quite the same.. Plexiglass with two "S"s is a the general term.. they just spelled it different to create a brand name out of it.. I could be wrong

Doesnt really matter..because most hardware like ace,home depot will have them for around the same amount..its not worth the headace of looking for the cheapest lexan because worse to worse you are gonna get a fair deal from home depot(look elsewhere and ya might save like $2 ;)).but i my answer is Ace hardware first because they might cut it to size for ya and then homedepot(cut it yourself ;)).

My home depot has a plexi cutter, my local Ace doesn't sell plexi so YMMV.

I got mine at Lowes. I was buying a piece for my monitor glass and two pieces for my marquee. I was looking at the different sizes and trying to figure out how big I needed to get all of my pieces. While I was waiting for the sales person, I noticed they had a trashcan inside of the cutting area full of scraps. When the person arrived I asked about it and he said I could have anything I wanted and they would even cut it. So I was able to buy a smaller sheet for my monitor glass, and got my marquee pieces for free :-) YMMV
