I'll second that... AI was horrifically bad.

Super Fuzz! Classic 80's grade B movie...

Was going to suggest some but realize you said Hollywood video

Heres some I like that many people haven't seen (although most people here have probably seen them)
Army of Darkness
Office Space
Hudsucker Proxy
Shawshank Redemption
Scotland, PA

As long as we're suggesting Coen Brothers movies le us not leave out Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski.

-
I like dark comedies. My favorites are Swimming with sharks, The Ref, and Sour Grapes. I haven't been keeping up with all of the recent movies because of all the game playing. :P
-
Speaking of dark comedy, Bad Santa is a great one to watch when no one else is home. You really don't want anyone to know that your sense of humor is that sick.

Without giving any criteria, I got a lot of replies. Thanks for the suggestions. There are several I haven't seen, so I will try those.

DC Cab

Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Primer
Donnie Darko (NOT directors cut!)
-
The Layer Cake
Sexy Beast
Two Excellent British Crime Dramas
-
Watched Layer Cake last night. I'd also recommend it.
-
Star Wars Series. IV, V, VI, I, II, II
Any reason why you chose to exclude Revenge of the Sith and watch Attack of the Clones twice? ;)

Primer
Donnie Darko (NOT directors cut!)
What is up with Donnie Darko? I watched it (not DC) this summer on advice from another independent film guy and when I told him I didn't get it nor like it, he got really angry and wouldn't discuss it further. Now granted, all those video games might have sullied my mind, but the BA in English balances it out. I know many people LOVE it. I don't mean to be hatin' on your suggestion - just playing Siskel to your Ebert.
Worst DVDs I've Ever Rented (IMHO):
Wing Commander
Dungeons & Dragons: The Movie
Donnie Darko
Since this is BYOAC, I'll stick to Action/Adventure with one old-school comedy:
Equilibrium is a great suggestion for a not-so-well-known movie. Christian Bale's Batman warmup.
Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels.
The Thing (1982)
Dr. Strangelove
Blade Runner
Mad Max (watch first then...)
The Road Warrior
-
Speaking of old school comedy: Strange Brew. Accept no substitutes, eh.
-S
-
Star Wars Series. IV, V, VI, I, II, II

Nope! Just Happy (fat fingers) that need a beer! Problemo fixed...

;D

- Boondock Saints
- Chupacabra Terror - rent this if you're in the mood for a horrible B movie that's so bad it's great.
- Harold and Kumar go to White Castle... everyone should see it at least 10 times.
The only other ones I can really think of are pretty well known, so you have almost certainly seen them already.
- The Usual Suspects
- Fight Club
- American Beauty
- American History X
I can go on...
-
- Harold and Kumar go to White Castle... everyone should see it at least 10 times.
Saw that for the first time a few days ago. I agree that it's pretty funny. If you have Starz, don't bother to rent it, it seems to be on all the time this month.

What is up with Donnie Darko?

Has anyone seen Jay & Silent Bob Do Degrassi?

I won't argue with you. Everybodies got different tastes, and that's cool. I once had somebody recommend Van Helsing to me. I went about a week after seeing it on the verge of castrating him every time I saw him. - And not in the cute chemical castration way either.
Other than the cool effects, Van Helsing suck-diddly-ucked.

Snatch.
Awesome movie!
And for a good clean laugh, Weekend at Bernies.
* Don't forget Pulp Fiction.

Enjoy your weekend! :o

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362270/)

Now theres a movie that most people hate, but those of us that get the humor love the movie. I think one of the requirements for liking it is that you've watched a number of the classic Coustou films.
-
If you have 6 or 8 hours to kill, get the first season of Arrested Development.
-
Caddyshack
Animal House
Stripes
Happy Gilmore
History of the World Part I (Mel Brooks)
Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks)
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
These are some of the funniest movies ever made.
-
I watched a Japanese horror film called "Audition" last night and I'd recommend it.
I can't remember the last time I saw a western horror film that was genuinely scary but this film freaked me out. It's actually more disturbing than scary but it lingers in the mind for a long time and is open to multiple interpretations.
There is some really good stuff coming out of Japan and Korea at the moment.
-
I'll second that... AI was horrifically bad.
I think that's a bit harsh but it was let down by a cop out ending. I think it would have been a much better movie if it had been directed by Stanley Kubrick as was originally planned.
-
Spaceballs. My fave.
-
Layer Cake. Fantastic film right there.
Also Batman Begins is good too (But I suppose everyone's seen that)
-
Equilibrium (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238380/)
Food flick
-
Here are some that immediately pop into my mind that many people haven't seen, some old, some new:
Harold and Maude
Evil Dead 2 (prequel to Army of Darkness, so don't see that first -- also it is 1000x better than AoD)
Miller's Crossing (another Coen Bro's film -- they're all good)
Punch Drunk Love
You Can Count On Me
One True Thing
Garden State
The Iron Giant
Amelie (same director as City of Lost Children, with more mainstream appeal)
Hellboy
Road Trip
I'll stop there cos I can go on and on. I love movies
-
Equilibrium (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238380/)
Food flick
also consider "a fridge too far."
-
I thought AI was an excellent movie with a somewhat disappointing ending. I'd recommend seeing it at least once...

what was wrong with the ending? the ending was just unusual for such a straightforward movie...

Spoiler Alert!
Well it just didn't make any sense. I can buy the robots (or were they aliens?) cloning the mother from a strand of hair. That was actually quite a good idea. But how were they able to retrieve her memories? And why could she only live for 24 hours? Spielberg didn't even bother coming up with a pseudo-scientific explanation for these things. We were just supposed to accept them at face value and for a supposedly "science" fiction film that's just not good enough.
Other than the crap ending it was an interesting and thought provoking movie IMHO. I certainly wouldn't describe it as straightforward.
-
I watched a few more weird movies lately of which I liked (in order):
- Crash
- You me and everyone we know
- Lost in Translation
Crash wasn't so weird actually and that one I think most people would like.
Then there is the usual movies:
- Hitchhikers guide
- Saw
- Sponge Bob squarepants the movie ;)
- Star wars III
and then I'm sad to admit I even liked Hitch. I know it's more a girlie movie, but still.
-
If you're into superhero films then I'd definitely recommend you check out Daredevil. It has to be one of the most underrated films of recent years.
However Electra (a spin off from Daredevil) and The Fantastic Four were both very disappointing.
-
just about anything directed Ridley Scott. Long live great epics!

i just took it to mean that they were all-knowing and could retrieve the memories from his brain. it was artificial. she wasn't really there. if she did come back from the dead, i wouldn't buy that.
-
Ack, I thought DareDevil was one of the poorer comic book adaptations put out. I liked FF, though it was no X-Men :)

daredevil sucked unless you liked seeing ben affleck with his shirtoff. it's worth a one-time viewing if you like superheroes and seeing jennifer garner get beatdown. fantastic four was totally unrealistic, but it was a lot of fun making fun of the ridiculousness of the superpowers. i can't wait till fantastic five.

The Directors Cut of Dare Devil was much better then the theater version.

This is one of my favorite reccomendations, because practically nobody's seen it. Do yourself a favor, and find a copy of "A Slight Case of Murder" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0206305/). (You want the 1999 version with William H. Macy. The 1938 pic of the same name has nothing to do with this one.)
-Crime, Western, Toughguy-
Sin City
Point Blank (Lee Marvin)
Payback (Mel Gibson) (see this one right after Point Blank ;) )
The Wild Bunch
The Magnificent Seven
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Reservoir Dogs (still Tarantino's best)
Soldier (under-rated)
The Getaway (Steve McQueen, not Alec Baldwin)
Open Range
-Comedy (smart)-
Swingers
The Blues Brothers
Clerks
Go
The Princess Bride
-Comedy (stupid)-
Super Troopers
Up The Creek
Strange Brew
Ski School
-
Kremmit has good taste.
-
I saw two movies based on the suggested list
Hitch Hickers guide to the galaxy
- I had to see it since I read the book.
Scotland PA
- I had picked this up several time before the list and never rented it.
Off to the video store
-
Poolhall Junkies is a great movie
-
I saw another suggestion from the "list". I Had Layer Cake laying around, but finally watched it. Cool movie with the future mister bond and the ex fiance of Jude Law (how the hell did he let her slip away!)
I still really do endorse Crash though. At the end of it I really had this feeling of "wow".
BTW are you looking for recent releases or also the old ones? I personally watch the the older movies on TV, but I see a lot of really old movies suggested too so maybe other people rent the classics too. My favorite old movie would be "Quest for the holy grail".

Old and new. Looking for hints to help sort through the all of the choices.

... the ex fiance of Jude Law (how the hell did he let her slip away!)
Getting caught cheating with another babe.
...
Batman Begins.
Sin City (Warning, for mature audiences)
-
Talking of Jude Law, another film well worth checking out is Gattaca.
-
Talking of Jude Law, another film well worth checking out is Gattaca.
I liked "Closer". Maybe more because of Natalie Portman as a stripper though ;) Actually, talking about that duo, I liked Cold Mountain too.
-
*HIGHLY recommended!*
Talking of Jude Law, another film well worth checking out is Gattaca.
-
Go back to the 70's and get:
The Warriors
Classic gang movie. And good music, albeit 70's music. :)
-
Just watched High Tension and it reminded me of another really good movie, Das Experiment. Its german, but the dvd has it both subtitled or dubbed over, which ever you prefer. I guess it could be classified as a suspense/horror, but its kind of hard to put it in a catagory. Anyways, its loosely based on the Stanford prison experiment (http://www.prisonexp.org/ if you havent heard of it, then I recommend reading about it, its pretty crazy what happened).
Also, don't rent High Tension...its just stupid. I'm guessing they decided to do the twist in the end because they liked the twist when they saw it in other movies, but it makes absolutely no sense in this movie. I think I hate is most of all because it could of been a really good movie.
where was I.....oh ya...also rent Galaxy Quest, very funny movie :)
-
i was gonna say, "that looks like any other lame DVD collection i see," but then i realized the movies are pretty sweet.
