I stopped in at EG games yesterday to ask if the old xbox joysticks would work on the new system...answer no, also I learned about the status of the xbox 360 presell, i did mine 2 months ago, the eb games i shopped at sold 108 presells & now on november 22nd, they are only going to have only 12 units, i was informed the first 12 people to pay in full will get there units & everyone else will wait, if they have more than 12 people then whomever purchased the most, will get there system, of course they employees told me they each purchased 3 to resell on ebay & they would get theres, the story is microsoft, was supposed to release 1,000,000 units & now they are going to only release 250,000, i was told it would prob. be the first of the year before i would get my presell, so i guess im going to get my money back & just wait...

that sucks if its true.
Make me even more happy that I didn't bother preordering anything. I'll get it when a modchip comes out and after a price drop.
-
Oh, its true, its funny while i was standing there the employees were talking to the store manager, no body wants to work november 22nd, when everyone will be wanting to pick up their 360's, i realize its not ebgames fault, that micrsoft will not be able to fill the preorders, but also ebgames should not sell preorders if they cannot fill them
thanks

Oh no that must be why there is rioting in France!
-
Now i wonder if this is actually a shortage, or if it is Microsoft deliberately sending out a smaller number of consoles like the recent rumors said.
I think MS is making a huge mistake if this is a deliberate ploy. I'd sure rather sell a million units and have 4x as many happy customers than have a slightly larger media event with tons of pissed off people.
-
They just want people to be able to sell them for two grand on Ebay in December.

Bill Gates will probably do it.

There is rioting in France?

Check out any news site, there is rioting all over France right now.

Sorry I forgot to inject <sarcasm> tags. What does members of the religion of peace rioting in France have to do with Xbox 360 shortages?
-
Well, the subject was in all caps, implying that it is a horrible, horrible injustice.
Such that would make people riot.
Don't read too much into it or your head a splode.

1st- never listen to EB games employees, they are the most uninformed uppity people when it comes to games. And don't always believe the internet.
2nd- I'll bet there is no shortage. Now I'm not familiar with the production process, but I'll bet that at this point in time they are not manufacturing systems for the release, that most likely has already been done and put in boxes ready to ship...the stores will probably get them by the middle-end of next week if this goes anyway like the xbox release did. I remember sitting on shipments of xboxes waiting for the release date well in advance.
And think about this as well, if there was a shortage do you think they would be running all these contests to win them through pepsi and 1up and such? I'm doubting that if they want to maximize profit they wouldn't be giving them away through 3rd parties.
-
As someone who works in the technology industry, never underestimate a company's ability to cut things way too close to a release date and get screwed over by a shortage of some component.
-
....why would anyone trust an EB employee?....they're mostly morons (sorry to any EB employees reading this...since you're on this site you are one of the few smart ones! ).
....but.....as per a Reuter's newspiece----
Microsoft's Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell said there wouldn't be a big initial spike and promised that the software giant would be able to ship between 4.5 and 5.5 million Xbox 360 consoles by the end of the business year to June 2006.
For the launch in a month, analysts expect Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft to ship between 1.5 million and 2 million consoles.
Microsoft is expected to have another factory producing Xbox 360 consoles in January, which will also increase supply ahead of Sony's spring launch of its next-generation PlayStation 3 console.
"It's much more important longer term to get production up and running," said Shawn Milne analyst at Friedman Billings Ramsey.

Well I started the email, on my lunch i drove to eb games & got a refund on my deposit for the presell, no problems with the refund since I was again told these would not be available, at this point im going to wait for a mod chip & a price drop like the other guy in the earlier post

another update....so much for "only 250,000" available according to an EB employee....what dopes.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9968123/
Microsoft is hoping to sell at least 3,000,000 within 90 days....
here's a PR quote--
Lee declined to say how many consoles would be on retailers

none of these link to actual articles....they're just "rumors" as slashdot states. This is all nonsense. They'll have plenty available.

Conflicting stories aside, I just stand by what I said before.
I can't see Microsoft making this HUGE a mistake, especially with the PS3 and Revolution nowhere in sight.
They'd get press if there were shortages... but not the press they want.
-
There are stories that they will trickle into stores over the next few months after the initial release instead of having a large sell out and then no more to be found for months.
Here is the latest news just released today:

also, do not forget that there are people in this world who just plain enjoy lying out their ass no matter the subject. used to work with one. couldn't believe a single word he said.
paraphrased example. "yeah, i've been there multiple times."
later- "can you lead? i don't know how to get there."
absolutely no reason to lie...he just did. (he went awol from the navy at one point.)

There is no shortage. The Chinese factories making the units are the same ones I import a great deal of 3rd party controllers and accessories from, and they have large stocks of 360 units. Any US-based shortage would be artificial, and imposed by Microsoft themselves. And I do hope they're not that stupid to try such a stunt.
You can always grey-import units direct from the manufacturers, although there's no doubt you'd be attracting quite a deal of attention from Microsoft if you did. I know quite a few people locally and in the US who are doing this and ebaying units, albeit in very small quantities to try and avoid too much nagative attention.
And don't think this is limited to Microsoft. Sony did the same thing with the PSP.

I REALLY don't see EB acting like that, a handful of my buddies work there and thats not the way THEY are handling it (can't speak for the others), but its in first order, first serve w/ a 48 hr hold time... if you don't come in, it goes to the next person in order of pre-buy.
I also dont' see a shortage either. I'm not saying that on opening day you won't find one... but there will be more shortly behind... and wil continue to flood in I'm sure. Same thing happened to the original XBOX release.
M$ wants to make money... you can't make money off something thats not on the shelf... it might be limited... but not a 'shortage'... just because EB can't fill their pre-orders right away, dosen't mean there wont' be enough someplace else.

I know EXACTLY who you're talking about. But I think he went AWOL from the National Guard...not Navy. ;)

Any "shortages" won't be imposed by retailers. Retailers are usually the ones begging manufacturers for more units. Here in AU, stores are ordering thousands of units and are lucky to see tens at times.

It's a well known fact that no console manufacturer makes money from console sales, but from game sales. Shortages are imposed to keep the "must have" factor alive for longer. If you saturate a market too early, your market becomes fickle and will turn elsewhere. Keeping the market hungry by imposing shortages ensures you keep your product on the front page of catalogues for longer, and keep average sales going for longer also.
I know it's a strange concept. I find the whole thing totally bizzare, but there's a big difference between what we as consumers want, and what they as "marketing experts" believe we should have.
I personally am not lending any credit to the "shortage" rumour until I see it for myself. Plenty of companies have tried this stunt before, so there's no doubt that it's possible. But Microsoft are known for their desire for dominant market share, so if they're smart, they'll get as many units out there as they can.
