Title: Anyone willing to do sideart pro bono?
Post by: Mark70 on November 07, 2005, 12:06:11 pm
I have come to the realization that I'm not satisfied with my artistic abilities enough to put it on my cabinet.

Here's my concept

I would like something in the style of the Galaxian, or Centipede side art, except with a hero theme.

Not to sound rude, but asking for free artwork is a bit of a cheek.

Yes, apearantly.  I got a similar response from www.conceptart.org

I wasn't aware that it was such a social atrocity.

You'll have to forgive me.  I'm used to the game mod community where I've done free artwork for several mods.  I model 3d characters and hand them over to the mod team.  What  you get out of doing this sort of thing is a sense of satisfaction and fair use of the product.

Again, here, as at conceptart.org.  I deeply regret insulting the 2d art community.

Nothing wrong with asking for something for free !

If you sell artwork then just dont bother answering !

My opionion anyway :)

Lets face it - if no-one gave artwork away then there wouldn't be the http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/ website would there ?

Its not that people arent willing to create artwork for free but usuallly its because they is a goal to be reached which mutually benefits both sides.

If its very specific artwork and it is and not even arcade related, I think its a bit of a cheek for someone not to agree some sort of dangling carrot.....

What does "a bit of a cheek" mean exactly.  Obviously it's like insulting someone, but forgive me, I'm Canadian and haven't heard that used before.

And I do understand that the artist wants to get something out of it.  You get your artwork applied in a real world application.  You get copies of the rendered 3d mock up, which alone would be credible for anyone wanting to apply for a job as a texture artist in the game industry.  Any image mapped to a 3d object is related to work as a texture artist.  Heck, I'll hadn over the design for the CP and the pelt from the whole cabinet model and have you do a texture sheet if you like.  Then you could demostrate an unwrapped texture.  I'll do the UVW mapping and unwrapping myself, for you.

Being cheeky is a british term for being a cad in a naughty way....perhaps a milder term of taking the pee but not as strong. Which is why I used the term instead of the latter.

If teh artwork is something not related to specifically original arcade artwork or arcade related homebrew, I suggest perhaps posting on a artwork forum that specialises in bespoke original designs.

This forum is really about arcade art with a tendancy to do themed art aswell.

No disrespect to yourself, but if it is something that is mainly out of the main box, you should at least offer some sort of deal...perhaps offer teh person a few XB/PS2/GC/PC games etc of their choice?

Keeps the budget down and everyone gets what they want.

Wouldn't that be fair?

So, something like this is a bit of a cheek?

I would say being "cheeky" or having a laff at someones expense....jovial even.

Nothing nasty.....
