I own a Gauntlet 2 cabinet that somebody put a Battletoads PCB in; its works fine.

Adjusting your vertical hold should fix the problem assuming the board is good. If you look up a manual for your monitor that will tell you where the control is if you don't know, if you can't find one ask here and I'm sure someone can help you out. Just adjust the v-hold until your picture locks into place and stops rolling, keep in mind you will most likely need to adjust it back after you change back to your battletoads/xmen/tmnt boards (not really a problem unless you swap them every few minutes...)
I just noticed you said +12v wire was disconnected as well... reconnecting these should do no harm (I dont see how it would, both of my machines have them hooked up and it is jamma standard), I should think that this isnt doing your boards any good if they are not receiving the power they require, if they do require it. If they are disconnected, I would first check the voltages with a multimeter to make sure they are OK... they might have been disconnected for a reason.
Also, I wouldn't worry too much about electrocution while looking for controls... they should be mounted in a fairly easy-to-get-to location - either in a row on the pcb or possibly on a remote control board, you shouldn't need to go poking around to find them, anyway

Hey and to follow up on what you said, the manual that I found for the first Gauntlet cabinet says that the cabinet has one of three possible monitors:
139003-1006 Disco (ADI) 19" Color Raster Display
or
139016-1007 Hantarex 19" Color Raster Display
or
139017-001
Wells-Gardner 19" Color Raster Display
I really have no idea which monitor I have, I'll see if i can figure it out tonight.

I suggest looking at Bob Roberts' Monitor ID page or posting pictures of what's in your cabinet.

OK! So I found the v-hold knob (along with like 6 other knobs), adjusted it, and my picture works great.
Only problem is the sound pcb for NBA Jam T.E. isn't functioning. It was sold as working, the damn thing isn't making a peep. I hooked up the -5v wire I talked about, just in case that was the problem (I learned in the process that my +12v was in fact hooked up, but two yellow -5v wires were disconnected, as were two orange +5v wires, although two red and orange +5v wires WERE connected, guess they were extra or something).
So I hooked up the -5v in the same style as the wires that were already connected, and it didn't fix my sound problem. I tried adjusting the sound pcb's connected sound pot, that didn't do anything, except if I pumped the volume, I could hear very quiet, very distorted noised coming from the speakers that corresponded with the images on the screen. This would make me think that the sound card is functioning, just not receiving power or or something. The only wires that connect the sound card to the main pcb are a ribbon cable and an adaptor with a bunch of pins.

Look in the NBA Jam manual at the wiring interconnection diagram. It should show you what cables are hooked to what boards. Could be you might be missing a cable, a cable plugged into the wrong connector, or maybe the ribbon cable is plugged in backwards.

OK. So I hooked up the inter-board wiring the RIGHT way, and the sound is working. Heres the funny thing. All of the sounds that are SUPPOSED to play, play fine. However, random sounds from the game will constantly play OVER the normal sounds, making for very confusing and noisy audio. This seems to stop intermittenly, even for a whole game.
I noticed that the one pin on the sound board seems to be missing (broken off?) and one of the inter-board wires fits over this section of what I guess is supposed to be 4 pins, but is only 3. Maybe there is an intermittent connection between contacts and the sound board is getting confused?

Your sound board receives data from the game board. There is a connector for power and a connector to the external volume control as well as a connector for speakers.

Ok. The wire bundle that includes the power and speaker wires spliuts into two connectors on the sound board, a large connector, and one that only contains 4 pins (1 of these four pins on my sound board appears broken off). I'm not sure whic would be the power and which would be the speakers. Could such a broken pin be causing the problem I described?

I would strongly suggest sending both your gameboard and sound board to www.eldoradogames.com for repair.
I think you're getting in over your head now.
