Title: Where do I get the "cone" atari buttons?
Post by: sassylikeamidget on January 22, 2003, 09:57:30 am
I don't even know what they're called, so I'm having a hard time finding any.

Does anyone make the buttons that Missle Command had as fire buttons?  They're cones with a little red (translucent) button on top.  I'd really like to get my hands on these as they'd be great for Enter and Esc buttons for my 3x Cocktail cabinet project.

BTW, does anyone have dimensions for a 1 player cocktail control panel (mine'll have 1 4-way, two fire buttons and *hopefully* the cone buttons described above for enter, esc, pause, etc).

Atari part # P163 mfg by Cherry.  The story I heard is that Cherry obsoleted the part about 10 yrs ago and no longer has the tooling to reproduce these.  Unless you can find a Cherry distributor or local arcade parts vendor that has some of these sitting on a shelf somewhere, you may only be able to find these on eBay occasionally.  I've seen them go for various prices, but you can expect to pay around $30/pair for them (switch & cone) if you see them on eBay.

Also, they're typically called "volcano" buttons if you need a search term for E-bay

If you live close by (NJ,CT,NY) I have a pair, come by and see if you like it and maybe i'll let go for a cheap price.

I live in WI.  I thought they would be nice and small for the 3 cocktail cabinets I'm building.  But, since they're rare, I don't want to take them from someone who would use them to restore an old machine.

I'll just look for some other small buttons to use.

Thanks for the help!

I blew up one of my volcano buttons, because I am stupid (there's a thread about it from last week or so).

I took the blown one to the local arcade machine / juke box distributor and asked, "got any of these?"  The guy looked at me funny (lots of people look at me funny for some reason) and wandered off.  I thought perhaps he didn't think I was worth his time, so I perused the retired juke box CDs for a while.

After a few minutes he came back with a handful of them and asked me how many I'd want, and that they were expensive because they don't make them any more.

"How expensive?"

"$6 each"

"I'll take two."

The ones he had are the "low black cone" kind, and the one I wanted to replace is a "high silver cone."

The cones are interchangable.  The low black cone has threads on the inside diameter for the switch to screw up into, and threads on the outside diameter so it can accept a nut and afix itself to the metal CP.  The high silver cone is just a round nut that comes off when you take the switch off the panel.

The mounting hole necessary for the low black cone is bigger than the high silver one... 1/2" vs. 3/8" maybe, I don't have calipers on me.

Now if I can just figure out the voodoo of resistors, I should be able to have lit volcano buttons on my machine again!
